JUE 200/2 – ENGLISH I
LECTURER: DR. PUVANESWARY MURUGAIAH

INTRODUCTION
JUE 200 is an intermediate level English proficiency course offered by the School of
Distance Education (PPPJJ). It is meant for students who have passed JUE 100 English
course and those who have secured a band 4 score in MUET.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES
This course is a continuation of JUE 100. It is designed to improve your proficiency in
the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) as well as your
grammar and vocabulary at the intermediate level. It is hoped that this course would
encourage you to use the language more frequently and effectively in your daily
activities.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, you must be able to:
1. use grammar structures accurately and demonstrate a good range of vocabulary
2. express yourself clearly in English
3. read and comprehend a variety of texts
4. write short summaries in the English language

COURSE CONTENT
The course content comprises the four language skills –reading, writing, speaking and
listening as well as grammar. These will be reinforced and enhanced during the four (4)
video conference sessions – two before the Intensive course and two after the Intensive
course. The video conference sessions will be based on the mini-lectures (e-kuliah).
Please go through the lectures before attending the video conferencing sessions.

The main source of content for this course is the mini lecture series that will be uploaded
in the portal.

Unit 3 – Writing
Unit 4 – Speaking
Unit 5 – Listening

Supplementary notes and exercises on grammar and the four skills will also be posted on
the e-learning portal of PPPJJ. You are encouraged to try exercises on English that can be
downloaded from the Internet or found in various textbooks that are available. Read
English texts and practise using the language as much as you can. As the saying goes,
“Practice Makes Perfect”.

E-LEARNING PORTAL
The e-learning portal will be used widely for this course. I will post numerous
supplementary exercises, passages and other information in the portal. News and updates
will also be posted. We can communicate with one another and practise the English
language by writing in the forum or blogs made available in the portal.
