Motivation:
SETTING THE MOOD
 The students will guess what the pictures or illustrations are all about and they will try
to fulfill the missing letters to complete a word/s.
 ACTIVITY: Concept Note No. 1

Topic: Writing a Thesis Statement

Thesis statements can also be explicit or implicit. Implicit thesis statements do not
clearly express the main idea of a text. The reader has to infer from all the details stated in the text.
On the other hand, explicit thesis statements express the main idea clearly and directly in the
text read.

If the thesis is stated at the beginning, then the reader may expect that the following sentences
support or develop it. The ideas are said to be organized in deductive order. However, if the
thesis is stated at the latter part of the text, then the preceding statements are the details or the
specifics. This follows the inductive order. Remember that, thesis statements require proof or
evidences to make your stand more convincing and effective.
 Elements of a Thesis Statement

1. Topic
 The topic of your paper.

2. Argument/Claim
 This depends on the type of paper you are writing. If it is an argumentative paper, then this
should express your opinion.
 If it is a research or explanatory paper, this should explain the purpose of your paper.

3. Evidence
 The support for your argument/claim.

Why do we have to write a thesis statement?

We must write thesis statement:

● to test your ideas by narrowing them into a sentence or two
● to better organize and develop argument
● to provide the reader with “guide” to the argument

CHARACTERISTICS OF A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT:

1. Direct and limited scope
2. Arguable- People can agree or disagree with the assertion/opinion
3. Supportable- there are reliable information and evidence to support the assertion/ opinion.

ARGUMENT/CLAIM: I agree with legalizing abortion in the Philippines since every mother’s
situation varies.

Remember: Thesis statements require proof or evidences to make your stand more convincing
and effective.

A thesis statement should present the assertion/opinion in relation to the topic of an essay/article.

PARTS OF A THESIS STATEMENT

1. TOPIC
 Subject of the text/ a specific topic

2. POSITION
 Your stand on the topic/valid claim/assertion/opinion

3. REASON/S
 Explanation and justification of your position

4. CONCESSION
 An opposing viewpoint on the topic
 Anti/ disagreement of your opinions about the topic

Remember: What you include in your thesis statement should be reflect in your essay.

HOW TO WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT

 Identify the details based on the parts of a thesis statement before writing it completely.

TOPIC: Regulating Children’s Mobile Gaming

POSITION: Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend a mobile gaming.
 It inhibits social interaction.

REASONS: It shortens children’s attention span.

It’s not always intellectually stimulating.

CONCESSION: Mobile gaming can be educational.

MODELS OF THESIS WRITING

BASIC THESIS STATEMENT:

Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming.

THESIS STATEMENT WITH CONCESSION:

(Basic Thesis Statement + Concession)

b. ABSTRACTION
Now, let us sum up what you have learned from our lesson by completing the given phrases
below.

A thesis statement serves as a roadmap of a paper and it is the central idea of the text.

2. What makes a strong thesis statement?

A thesis statement should offer a debatable claim that you can prove or disprove in your essay.

1. Psychologists have argued for decades about how a person’s character is formed. Numerous
psychologists believe that one’s birth order (i.e. place in the family as the youngest, oldest, or
middle child) has the greatest influence. I believe birth order can have a significant impact in the
formation of a child’s character based on my own experience growing up in a family of four
children. Birth order can strongly affect one’s relationship with parents, relationships with others,
and how one views responsibility as an adult.
