Motivation:
SETTING THE MOOD
The students will guess what the pictures or illustrations are all about and they will try
to fulfill the missing letters to complete a word/s.
ACTIVITY: Concept Note No. 1
Thesis statements can also be explicit or implicit. Implicit thesis statements do not
clearly express the main idea of a text. The reader has to infer from all the details stated in the text.
On the other hand, explicit thesis statements express the main idea clearly and directly in the
text read.
If the thesis is stated at the beginning, then the reader may expect that the following sentences
support or develop it. The ideas are said to be organized in deductive order. However, if the
thesis is stated at the latter part of the text, then the preceding statements are the details or the
specifics. This follows the inductive order. Remember that, thesis statements require proof or
evidences to make your stand more convincing and effective.
Elements of a Thesis Statement
1. Topic
The topic of your paper.
2. Argument/Claim
This depends on the type of paper you are writing. If it is an argumentative paper, then this
should express your opinion.
If it is a research or explanatory paper, this should explain the purpose of your paper.
3. Evidence
The support for your argument/claim.
ARGUMENT/CLAIM: I agree with legalizing abortion in the Philippines since every mother’s
situation varies.
Remember: Thesis statements require proof or evidences to make your stand more convincing
and effective.
A thesis statement should present the assertion/opinion in relation to the topic of an essay/article.

Subject of the text/ a specific topic
2. POSITION
Your stand on the topic/valid claim/assertion/opinion
3. REASON/S
Explanation and justification of your position
4. CONCESSION
An opposing viewpoint on the topic
Anti/ disagreement of your opinions about the topic
Remember: What you include in your thesis statement should be reflect in your essay.

Directions: Identify the thesis statement in each of the following text. Write your answers on a

1. Psychologists have argued for decades about how a person’s character is formed. Numerous
psychologists believe that one’s birth order (i.e. place in the family as the youngest, oldest, or
middle child) has the greatest influence. I believe birth order can have a significant impact in the
formation of a child’s character based on my own experience growing up in a family of four
children. Birth order can strongly affect one’s relationship with parents, relationships with others,
and how one views responsibility as an adult.
