WHAT IS

— Stress can be defined as any type of change that


causes physical, emotional, or psychological strain.
- It is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to
cope with mental or emotional pressure.
- Stress is our body’s response to pressure.

- Stress can be positive or eustress when something


keeps you alert. At the same time, stress can be
negative or distress when a person faces continuous
challenges.
- Everyone experiences stress to some degree and can
cause major damage to health, mood, productivity,
relationships, and quality of life.

- The situations and pressures that cause stress are


known as stressors.
• Stressors
- Stressors are situations that are experienced as a
perceived threat to one’s well-being or position in life.
This includes losing a job, death of a loved one, and work
promotion.

- Stressors lead to stress response or the body's


reactions to stress which help bring balance.
- Stress has different sources which range from life-
threatening events to small events. These include:

1. MAJOR LIFE CHANGES


- These are key life changers that influence an
individual's family and social life. And these can
threaten one's sense of security and self-esteem.
Some examples are; death of a loved one, and losing a
job.

2. EVERYDAY PROBLEMS
- Stress or hassles that we encounter daily are part of
this group. Examples are; misplacing or losing things,
and physical appearance.

3. PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS
- Surroundings affect the level of day-to-day stress.
These include unbearable weather conditions, noise such
as sound of machines from factories, and impact of
calamities.

- These include conflicts, disagreement with family
members and friends, and difficulty in managing issues
resort to alcohol and drugs.

CAN CAUSE STRESS?

Stress can be caused by a variety of different common


life events, many of which are difficult to avoid. It can
be caused by both external and internal factors.

-The human body is designed to experience stress and


react to it. Here are some of the effects of stress on
the body;

• Muscle pain
• Chest pain

- Stress can affect all aspects of our lives, including


our behavior. And here are the effects of stress on
behavior;
• Procrastinating and neglecting responsibilities
• Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes
• Exhibiting more nervous behaviors, such as nail
biting, fidgeting, and pacing.
If you’re often under stress, you need to learn
to manage it well. Stress can affect your well-
being. Over time, you may show some of these

Keep in mind

Stress is normal and, to some extent, a necessary part of


life. We just all need to learn how to manage stress before
it gets too much. We must always keep a positive attitude
and spend time with the people we love.
