MODULE

SOLVING QUADRATIC INEQUALITIES
Solving quadratic equations was your focus for the past lessons. But in this
module, you will be concentrating in finding solutions for quadratic inequalities which
will also be using the concept of quadratic expression, especially in factoring. At the end
of this module, there is an assurance that you are going to appreciate and utilize this in
solving real life problems.
WHAT I KNOW
PPREPREVIER
! Find out how much you already know about the module. Write the letter that you
think is the best answer to each question on a sheet of paper. Answer all items. After
taking and checking this short test, take note of the items that you were not able to
answer correctly and look for the right answer as you go through this module.

IER!
If a number line is divided into three regions, the two numbers that divide it are
the boundaries. If the boundaries are indicated with open circles, then they are not
included in the set. If they are indicated with closed circles, then they are part of the
set.
Recall:
Write the interval notation for each region in the number lines.

QUADRATIC INEQUALITIES
A quadratic inequality is an inequality of the form ax 2 + bx + c < 0, where a, b
and c are real numbers with a≠0. The inequality symbols >, ≤ and ≥ may also be used.
If a quadratic inequality is factorable, it can be solved using a graphs and test
points. The graph will show where each factor is positive, negative or zero.
Step 1. 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 – 4 = 0
(𝑥 + 4) (𝑥 – 1) = 0
𝑥 = −4 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 1
Step 2.
-4 1
We use open circle for -4 and 1 because they are not part of the solution
set.
-5 -4 0 1 2

Step 3.
Using the -5, 0 and 2 as test points for each region for the inequality
𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 – 4 > 0 we have,
Step 4.
-4 1
We can see from the test point that there are -5 and 2 gives a true. The
solution set of the inequality x2 + 3x – 4 > 0 is shown above.
Note that -4 and 1 is not included in the graph because for those values of
x, the product is zero. In symbols, the solution set is
Step 2.

2
We use closed circle for the values of the variable because they are
included.

−3, 0 and 4 are test points. Substitute them to the original inequality.
Original Inequality: 2𝑥 2 – 𝑥 ≥ 15
2(−3)2 + (−3) ≥ 15 or 18 – 3 ≥ 15 or 15 ≥ 15 (TRUE)

WHAT’S MORE
In a separate sheet, solve each quadratic inequality. State the solution set using
interval notation and sketch its graph if possible.
Note: Show the step by step procedures.
1. 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 > 0
2. 𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 25 ≤ 0
3. 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 8 ≤ 0
4. 𝑥 2 − 16 < 0
5. 3𝑥 − 𝑥 2 > 0

1.) – x2 + 6x + 7 ≥ 0
3.) x2 – 2x – 11 ≤ 0
4.) x2 – 2x + 3 > 0
5.) 2x2 + x – 6 ≤ 0

B. Gardening
Angel has 40 meters of metal
fencing material to fence three sides of a
garden. She wants her garden to have an
area of at most 200 square meters. A tall
wooden fence serves as her fourth side
1. If y represents the length of one of the two equal sides of the garden, what
mathematical sentence would represent the area of the garden?
2. What could be the range of the length of the side opposite the tall wooden
fence?
