EMPTY or NULL SET- A set with no element.

Ø (Null Set symbol)
E={ } (reads as “set E”)

N(E)= 0 (reads as ‘the cardinality of set E is equal to zero”)


Note: Cardinality means “number of elements”.

SINGLETON SET- A set with one element.


S = {3} (set S is a singleton set for it has one element)

N(S) = 1 (reads as “the cardinality of set S is equal to 1”)


Note: Cardinality means “number of elements”.

FINITE SETS- a set with limited elements.


Example #1:
Set F is a set of counting numbers less than 6.
F= {1,2,3,4,5} (Set F has five elements)
n(F)= 5 (reads as “the cardinality of set F is equal to 5”)

Example #2:
Set M is a set of months in a year.

M = {January, February, March, April, May, June, (set M has twelve elements)

July, August, September, October, November, December}

n (M) = 12 (reads as “the cardinality of M is equal to 12”)

INFINITE SETS- A set with unlimited elements.


Examples:
1. Set N is a set of counting numbers.
N = {1, 2, 3, … }
. n(N)= Infinite (reads as “the cardinality of set N is infinite)
UNIVERSAL SET- Is the set containing all elements and of which all other sets are
subsets. It’s also represented with a capital letter U.
Example:
Let U be the Universal Set.
1. Set U is a set of all vowels in the English Alphabet.
U = {a, e, i, o, u}
A = {a, e, i} (set A is a proper subset of set U)

B = {i, o, u } (set B is also a proper subset of set U)

Set A, and B are subsets of universal set U. All the elements in set A and B are found in the
universal set U.
2. Set U is the set of counting numbers from 1 to 20.
U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 }
A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 } (set A is a proper subset of set U)
B = {6, 7, 8, 9} (set B is a proper subset of set U)
C = {10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 } (set C is a proper subset of set U)

D = {16, 17, 18 } (set D is a proper subset of set U)

Set A, B, C and D are subsets of universal set U. All the elements in set A, B, C, and D
are found in the universal set U.
