MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 9
First Quarter / Week 2 / Day 1

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW (OBJECTIVE):

Solves quadratic equations by extracting square roots.

WHAT’S NEW (YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY)

Extracting Square Roots of Quadratic Equation

Finding the root of a quadratic equation can be done by extracting the square root of the
form of ax  c = 0.
2

Example: 1. Extract the roots of the following equations.

a. x2 = 9 (Solve for x by getting its square root)

√x2 = √9
X=3
Answers x = 3 and x = -3 (the roots are 3 and -3, because when you multiply 3x3 and -3 x -3 the product is
9).

b. -10+ x2= 15
-10+10+ x2 =15+10 (add both side by 10)

x2 = 25
√𝑥 2 = √25 (Solve for x by getting its square root)

X = 5
Answers x = 5 and x = -5 (the roots are 5 and -5)
c. (x-4)2=100
√(𝑥 − 4)2= √100
x-4 = 10
x-4= 10 > x= 10+4 > x=14
x-4= -10 > x= -10+4 > x= -6

Answer. x= 14 and x= -6

Example 2. Find the roots of the following.

a. √4 = 2
Answers are: 2 and -2. (the product of 2x2 and -2x2 is equal to 4)

b. √121 = 11
Answers are: 11 and -11.

Square Root Property

If x2 = a, and a is an integer, then and a is an integer, then x = √𝑎. It is important to

remember that we can only use this property if the numerical coefficient of the variable x is 1.

Example #1. Solve: x2 – 25 = 0

Solution:

a. Begin by isolating the square.

b. Next, apply the square root property.

c. Answer: The solutions are −5 and 5. The check is left to the reader.
