Activity 1: STS Introductory Activity

Part 1 – Understanding STS

Answer the following question :

1. Cite two (2) reasons why STS was developed. (10 pts)

- They say, “behind great things lie great minds.” There are two reasons why Science, Technology, and
Society developed that led us to a better state of living. First, we have seen and read how the people lived
back then and how they intelligently utilized different things that can suffice their needs, just like how the
Sumerians developed things that have been of great help to their daily lives and served as historical value.
The Sumerians have made the consequences of taking advantage of the scientific knowledge and
technological systems that occurred.

Secondly is problems of the surroundings. Back then, means of communication, transportation, and cures
were outstanding issues, but they were clever to be pioneering crafts through their initiative. They used
scientific principles for the betterment of their situation. It implies that STS developed because it allows
us to make new technologies, solve problems, and make knowledgeable decisions. And I can say that the
process was coiled with those great growths: “Grow through what you go through.”

2. Explain the word “technology” and “technology transfer” in your own words. (5 points)

- These two terms are pretty confusing as it pertains to the same word, “technology.” However, these are
different. Technology talks about the developed equipment from applying people’s scientific knowledge.
This equipment is used for practical purposes, especially in the industrial sector. Meanwhile, if these
invented machines or equipment are run down for public use, that will become a Technology transfer.
Technology transfer is mainly an attempt to transform inventions and scientific outcomes into new
products and services that benefit society.

3. Discussed 2 ways each in which science and technology has benefitted the society in the area of:
(15)

a) Health
• Delays in the healthcare system are inevitable. But with Technology advancement, it helped
create a faster turnaround time. Shorter turnaround time makes saving lives much faster.
Besides, saving lives by saving time matters the most in the healthcare sector.
• Herbal medicine has been a go-to medicine. But as time passed by, the grinding herbs has
turned into a tablet- and capsule-fused medicines. Indeed, the development of science and
technology is a great help in discovering therapeutic drugs that can ease illnesses. Easy to find,
guaranteed life.

b) Agriculture
• The types of machinery being used in plowing and mowing rice fields and corn fields benefitted
the farmers for it not just made farming very easy but also sprightly
• The ways in eliminating pesticides eased the farmers through the development of these that
combat the primary enemy of farmers: pests, insects, and rodents

c) Communication
• Through the application of scientific knowledge, internet software rose to the top as one of the
means of communicating love ones overseas.
• The development of phones has been pivotal nowadays, especially on the brink of the
pandemic. Our education has shifted to online classes; every student must own at least one
device to serve as their learning channel.

a. People have become more intellectual in adapting to the development of science and technology.
How they nurtured the development has led them to establish web browsers that allow computer users
to find and view information on the Internet.

b. How people became open-minded to the things that needed to be addressed, just like the Sexual
health education program. Ancient civilizations considered sex education wasn’t necessary. But as a
consequence of science and technology development, it now provides information and support to
improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to sexual and reproductive health.

c. The aid of science and technology helped us deepen our perception of the government and how we
are governed. We all know that responsiveness is one of the tenets of good governance, and the
government is all that we want in times like this. And we always wish that the officials view the provision
of public services to the population as government largesse. The perception of government
responsiveness is essential in building active and engaged citizenry, which we are eyeing this coming
2022 election.

5. Give two (2) examples each of inventions on the different periods mentioned in the curriculum guide
with the name of the inventor. (20)
