Earth fault leakage Relays with separate sensor

From 0,03 to 30 A

1. General
 The relays shall comply with IEC 60947-2 annex M or corresponding standards in force in the IEC
member countries (BS EN 60947-2, NF EN 60947-2, …).

 The relays shall be of solid state type (mechanical type shall be not accepted).

 The relays shall be protected against nuisance tripping (transient currents or overloads caused by
switching surges or by lightning surges ( ). Especially
 concerning the overvoltage withstand, the sensors shall comply with IEC 60664-1 for overvoltage
category IV for up to 1000 V electrical network to allow their installation to be safe on any LV network.
Furthermore the relays shall be of clas II on front face according to IEC 60664-1.
 concerning the EMC withstand, the relays shall comply with the IEC 60947-2 annex M requirements
and be tested for immunity according to the IEC 60000-4-1 to –4-6 standards.
Test certificates shall validate these tests.

 The relays shall be insensible to no dangerous fault currents with harmonics even if these are higher
than the setting threshold. The relay-tripping curve according to the frequency shall comply with the
safety requirements given by the IEC 60479 standard.

 The relays and sensor shall be able to operate in the presence of fault currents with pulsating DC
components: they shall be of class A according to the IEC 60755 and IEC 60947-2 annex M
classification.

 The relays and sensor shall have a short-circuit withstand in accordance to the maximum
constraints of the LV network to be controlled:
- the 3-phases short-circuit withstand shall be of 100 kA – 0,5 s,
- the residual short-circuit withstand shall be of 85 kA – 0,5 s
The withstand shall be validated by test certificates.

2. Operating and safety

 The relays shall be adjusted in discreet steps for sensitivity adjustments and time-delay adjustments
(continuous adjustment shall be not accepted). These steps may be fully discriminated.

 The sensitivity In, from 0,03 to 30 A, shall be adjustable using a 9 position fine control switch.

 The time delay, from instantaneous to 4,5s, shall be adjustable using a 9 position switch.

 The manufacturer shall guarantee the total tripping time of the relay in conjunction with the breaking
device (combination time). For 30 mA setting, combination times shall comply with the values of B1
table of IEC 60947-2
I fault In 2 In 5 In 10 In
Combination time 0,3 0,15 0,04 0,04

 The continuity of measurement circuit –no break on the sensor-relay link – shall be continuously and
automatically monitoring. Relay supply and correct operating shall be monitored; in fault case, an
output contact shall operate.

 Relays shall operate correctly

 up to 55% of the nominal supply voltage for relays supplied
- by DC voltages from 20 V to 48 V,
- by AC voltages from 48 V to 415 V
400 V/230 V LV network to be monitored.
 for –35° C to + 70°C

 to reinforce the continuity of service and the immunity against the natural earth leakage, the non
operating threshold of relays shall be at least equal to 0,8 times the operating one In.

3. Construction

 The manufacturer shall offer as standard ranges of relays that could be installed horizontally or
vertically on DIN rail as well as flush mounted (for instance to be installed in MCC drawer)

 The relays installed on DIN rail shall be very compact (maximum 54 mm wide)

 The manufacturer shall offer as standard ranges of associated sensors that are either toroidal
transformer of closed type with an inside diameter of 30 to 200 m’s or toroidal transformer of the open
type of 45 to 110 mm.
The sensors shall be in insulated thermoplastic case.
The relays could be also connected to rectangular sensor specifically designed for measurement on
busbars.

4. Communication

 The relays shall be equipped with one changeover fail safe output contact without latching for the
prealarm setting

 The relays shall be equipped with local indication using LED’s:

Green = power supply; red = prealarm ; red = alarm
