With respect to Generator and Main Circuit Breaker and their protection
device (i) What are the safeties incorporated in Air Circuit Breaker of ship's
Generator and Prime mover. (10 Marks)
The followings are the ACB safeties incorporated in ship’s generator:
1. Under voltage trip (set 50% of rated voltage).
2. Over current trip. (Long time delay, short time delay and Instantaneous trip).
(i) Long time delay – 105% - 120% of FLC, 20 – 120 sec.
(ii) Short Time delay – 200% - 600% of FLC, 0.1 – 1 Sec.
(iii) Instant – 1000% of FLC
3. Arc contacts.
4. Arc runner.
5. Arc chutes.
6. Simultaneously closing of all 3 contacts.
7. Arc contacts makes first and breaks after main contacts.
8. Preferential trip.
9. Reverse power trip.
10. Differential protection.

The followings are the Prime mover safeties:

1. Over speed trip
2. Lube oil low pressure trip
3. Jacket water high temperature trip
4. Emergency stop
5. Lube oil low pressure alarms
6. Control air low pressure alarm
7. Fuel oil leak off alarm
8. Fuel oil differential pressure alarm
9. Sump level low alarm
10. Exhaust gas temperature high alarm
11. Jacket water temperature high alarm
12. Jacket water temperature low alarm
13. Starting air low pressure alarms
14. Lube oil prime pump not in auto alarm
15. Turning rod not in position alarm

6. How will you fight a fire in galley? How will you at least restrict the fire if you
are the first person to sight the fire in galley. (8 Marks)

general fire or DCP for oil or metallic fire,
6. If possible put blanket over the fire to extinguish minor fire.
7. If the fire is major in size then with consultation with higher authority use major fire fighting
system installed in galley.
If I am the first person to sight the fire in galley then to restrict the fire I will do the steps:
1. Switch off all power supply including lighting and galley supply from outside of galley.
2. Switch off ventilation and exhaust of the galley.
3. Close all doors , hatches, and fire flaps of the galley for restrict the fire and smoke inside galley.
4. Try to remove all burning materials from adjacent compartment not to spread fire.
5. Try to do boundary cooling in adjacent compartment.
