What are the observable characteristics that you have heard from the
video? Give at least three (3) changes or transformations from the 1500s
down to 21st-century Filipino music.

Notice that there are lots of modifications of Filipino music, but the most
notable development is the arrangement or the design of a certain
musical piece. Over the past centuries, composers have developed a
system for understanding how music is put together and that is to have
a structure or form unto it which is very vital to the continuity of a
certain piece.

In this lesson, you will discover the actual definition of form and the
different types of it. You will also learn its uniqueness as we listen to
every note, melody, and totality of the given sample music
.

The form is the overall structure of a musical composition. It considers
balance, symmetry, proportion, pacing, and other topics related to the
overall presentation of a musical piece. It is very important to the
continuity of a piece over many centuries the composers have developed a
system for understanding how music is put together.

LABELING FORM WITH LETTERS

Lumenlearning.com (2020) discussed this idea that each section of the
music is labeled with a letter; from simplest to the most complex, letters
are used to label each major section on any musical piece. For example,

 the first section is the A section. If the second section is the same as the
first, it is also labeled as A. If it is much like the A section but with some
important differences, it can be labeled A. The A section can show up too
in the piece later and so on.

The first major section of a musical piece that is much different from A is
labeled as a B section, and other sections that are like it can be labeled B,
B’, BB’’, and so on. Sections that are not similar to A or B are labeled C
sections and so on.

Recognizing the section in any kind of music might be easy or difficult, it

depends if how you are familiar with that kind of music too. It can be
more challenging if you are hearing a piece of unfamiliar music.

TYPES OF FORMS IN MUSIC

Since you have understood already what Form is, let’s get to know the
different types of it.
• Strophic
• Binary
• Ternary
• Rondo

STROPHIC ( AAA )
This form is simply described as an as-verse repeating form. It uses the
same melody over and over in a repeated manner, studionotesonline.com

BINARY ( AB )
This type has two different sections. The majority refers to this as a verse-
chorus formula.

 TERNARY ( ABA, AABB )
This form is designed in three parts. A part of the section is the opening. B
is the new section with a new melody. The form is complete by the
repeated A section.

Our very own “Lupang Hinirang” is also in a Ternary form, which can be
labelled as ABC.

RONDO ( ABACA )
It is the only form that has a single theme (chorus) that keeps alternating
with various episodes, going back and forth between them. This form is
common in today’s genre, especially in Filipino Pop Music.

There are 4 main forms of Philippine Music namely the strophic, binary,
ternary, and the rondo. Understanding the musical form of a piece is an
important part of being a musician or even if you are a music lover. It
helps you recognize what is happening in the music by being able to
follow the different sections and be aware the changes from one theme to
another thus, listeners can enjoy music.
