1. Communication is an instrument used by two or more people to convey and

exchange information, ideas, thoughts and feelings. It can be done in a verbal and
non-verbal way. It is also used by people in their daily lives to understand each
other’s thoughts and opinion. Communication makes people’s lives easy.
Communication can be used to save someone’s relationship, friendship, job, family
and life.

3. These 3 personal experiences affirmed the importance of communication.

a. When I joined Ms. ESSU 2018, I was doubtful about my capabilities. I
suffered from multiple mental breakdowns. I cried and even decided to back
out. When we had our preliminary Q and A, I was so nervous. Seeing my co-
candidates and how obvious it was that they were so intelligent made me
doubt my capabilities. After the preliminary Q and A, when we got back to our
room. I cried and cried. I wanted to speak out my feelings after what
happened but, I had no one to talk to. Then my coach, Ma’am Denzyl,
approached me and asked me why I was crying. She told me that I can tell
whatever I was feeling. Then I told her everything I was carrying along the
journey. She listened and gave me advice. During the communication we
had, I was unconsciously building up my self-confidence. I thank God that she
uses her as an instrument to make me feel better and stop doubting myself. It
is indeed a great help for someone who suffers from anxiety to have someone
willing to listen and communicate.
b. During the pandemic, my sister suffered from depression without us knowing
it. We had zero idea that she was fighting with her own demons because she
became a very private person since the lock down started. Me, not knowing
the signs of depression and how a depressed person act did not notice it not
until she approached me crying saying sorry to me and how much she needs
someone to talk to. I lend my ears to every word she said. I listened to every
rants that was coming out from her mouth. The communication we had saved
her from drowning in her own problems. I was thankful that she approached
me and she let me help her to somehow heal her wounds and anything that is
killing her inside.

c. Communication once saved our friendship with my best friend. We had fought
and misunderstood each other. We came to the point where our friendship
was at stakes and we are about to end our friendship. Then he approached
me. We set aside our pride. We talked and talked until we realized that it was
only a misunderstanding. I was grateful that we chose to talk rather than end
the friendship we made for many years.

4. I had encountered speech barrier when I joined a certain pageant. During the Q&A
portion, fear and nervousness preceded me. I wasn’t able to understand the question
properly. My hands were shaking and I couldn’t think of anything. Because of that, I ended
up not answering the question that was given to me properly.
5. Intrapersonal Communication is where a person talks to himself in order to understand
the information he received. This may include self-talk where for example, a student trying to
understand the lesson that was delivered by his-her teacher. Interpersonal communication
differs from intrapersonal communication because the communication is done by two people
exchanging thought and ideas. Example of this can happen between two friends talking
about what they want to be in the future. Small-group communication is between two or
more people transmitting facts to reach common decision. This be between school
organizations planning for their activities. Public Communication. This can be done by one
speaker conveying informative speech to the audience. Example of this can be a speaker
having values orientation to school’s different organizations. Mediated Communication is a
type of communication that uses technology to transmit information. An example of this can
be a teacher sending activities or announcements to her students.
6. In this time of pandemic, I think the most applicable to the academe is The Shannon and
Weaver Model of Communication. The model of Shannon and Weaver patently show the
communication process during this time. The pandemic has made communication hard
because of these barriers specially in the academe. Some students aren’t able to receive
proper information transmitted by their teachers because the noise or barriers they
encounter.
