I. Do we make culture or does culture make us?

Culture is how we self-identify. It makes us who we are. However, it’s not like culture

is this mysterious force that influences people. For me, culture is completely under

our control. Moreover, culture allows us to express ourselves as individuals, at the

same time being part of a group. It allows us to learn from others and to build on the

efforts of others.

II. What is Popular Culture?

Popular culture is generally recognized by members of a society as a set of the

practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or prevalent in a society at a given

point in time. It includes media objects, entertainment and leisure, fashion and

trends, and linguistic conventions, among other things.

III. What is the difference between Popular Culture and Folk Culture?

Folk culture usually originates in a rural hearth; whereas popular culture usually

originates in an urban hearth. Folk culture is practiced by small homogenous groups

and it varies from community to community. On the other hand, popular culture is

uniform over a wide geographic area that shares certain customs despite differences

in other personal characteristics.

IV. How does the Western Culture influence our culture in the 20th century and the

emerging global mainstream of the early 21st century?

Western cultural hegemony is prevalent nowadays because of the greater access to

mainstream media like the Internet and its various sites that contain the cultural

trends that easily influence their subscribers or viewers.

V. What is the role of mass media in the development of Popular Culture?

The mass media has got a large audience that gives a lot of power to influence many

cultural aspects. That’s why popular culture has been closely associated with mass

media because it introduces and encourages the adoption of certain trends.

Ultimately, mass media enables communication and the exchange of positive cultural

values among different societies.
