1.Watch this YouTube video entitled “How did Engineers fix London’s Wobbly Millennium
Bridge?” using link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6O43mrc1kA and answer the following
questions:
a. What causes the wobbling of London’s Millennium Bridge? Elaborate in details.
Study looks at how individuals maintain balanced while walking to fully explain the
Millennium Bridge’s ‘wobble.’ Due to the enormous number of people crossing it on its
first day, the London Millennium Bridge swayed unexpectedly.
b. How did the Engineers fix the bridge? What practical solution did they apply?
Engineers rectified the Millennium Bridge’s swaying problems by equipping it with 37
energy dissipating dampers for horizontal movement control and 52 inertial dampers for
vertical movement control. Since its reopening in February 2002, the bridge hasn’t
experienced a serious wobble problem.
2. this YouTube video entitled “What is a Tuned Mass Damper?” using link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1U4SAgy60c and answer the following questions:
a.Define Tuned Mass Damper based on your own understanding.
For me tuned mass damper (TMD) is a vibrating mass that moves out of phase with the
perturbing force that causes vibration in the structure on which it is mounted. The TMD
mass’s inertial force dampens the structure’s resonant vibration by dispersing its energy
through its out of phase motion.
b.Define concept/system was applied in a Tuned Mass Damper?
Momentum Technologies provides a high frequency tuned mass damper; the Momentum
TMD. It is a state-of-the-art product for mitigating resonance vibration above 20Hz.
These unique characteristics makes the Momentum TMD very suitable for solving
vibration problems in small bore gas piping and machinery piping.
c. difference does a structure with a tuned mass damper make compared to a structure
without it?
Having a tubed mass damper is better than without it, Harmonic vibration causes
violent motion, which is stabilized by tuned mass dampers. They use a relatively light
component to lessen the vibration of a system, resulting in less intense worst-case
vibrations.
d. How does it work?
A tuned mass damper (TMD) is a vibrating mass that moves out of phase with the
perturbing force that causes vibration in the structure. The inertial force of the TMD mass
dissipates the energy of the resonant vibration of the structure due to its out of phase
motion.
e. Site an existing structure utilizing a Tuned Mass Damper.
 Seismic Friction Dumpers -Manufactured in Canada
 One of the most famous TMD’s is the one built for Taipei 101 which boasts a gigantic
spherical Tuned Mass Damper weighing approximately 730 tons and costing around $4
million.
 Park Tower in Chicago — The first building in the United States to be designed with a
tuned mass damper from the outset.
