Aim:- To extract essential oils present in

Saunf(Aniseed), Ajwain(Carum) and
Illaichi(Cardamom).
Requirement:-
Apparatus:- Steam generator (Copper vessel),
500ml round bottom flask, conical flask,
Condenser, glass tube, separating funnel, iron
stand, sand bath, tripod stand, burners.
Materials:- Ajwain, Saunf, Illaichi, petroleum
ether.
Procedure:-
(1) The apparatus is set up as shown in the
figure. The apparatus consists of stream
generator connected to the round bottom
flask through a glass inlet tube.
(2) The flask is connected to a water
condenser through a glass outlet tube.
Condenser is further attached to receiver
through the adaptor.
(3) Take 750 ml water in the steam generator
and start heating to produce stream.
(4) Take 100 g of crushed saunf in 500 ml
round bottomed flask.
(5) A vigorous current of stream from stream
generator is passed through the round
bottom flask.
(6) A part of the stream condenses in the
round bottom flask. As more stream is
passed, the stream volatile component of
saunf pass through the condenser along
with steam. These content on
condensation are collected in the
receiver.
(7) The content of the flask are heated by a
Bunsen burer in the order to prevent
excessive condensation of steam.
(8) The process of stream distillation is
continued for about half an hour.
(9) The distillate is transferred to a
separating funnel. It is extracted with 30
ml portions of petroleum ether three
times.
(10) Collect the petroleum ether in a 250ml
conical flask and dry it with using
anhydrous sodium sulphate.
(11) Remove the solvent from the dried
filtrate by careful distillation on a water
bath. The essential oil is left behind in the
distillation flask.
(12) Weigh the extracted essential oil. Note
the weight, colour and odour of the
essential oil.
(13) Repeat the experiment with ajwain and
illaichi.
Observation:-
Weight of saunf taken = 10 g
Initial weight of the bottle = …g
Weight of the bottle + essential oil= …g
Weight of the essential oil extracted = …g
Percentage of essential oil = (y-x)×100
100

Result:-
Weight of essential oil extracted = (y-x)
g
Colour of the saunf oil = ….
Odour of saunf oil = ….
