From 31 May to 6 June, I was assigned to weir and Intake. In previous week the excavation was
started for the remaining part of the weir which is still going on this week. The water was also diverted in
previous week to intake and undersluice part which is partially completed.

In this week I learned about the following activities.

Excavation:
Excavation is the first step of construction. It refers to the process of removing soil or rocks from its original
location, typically in preparation for constructing foundation, basement and underground utility line and
also for grading of the ground surface.

Excavation should be carried out to the lines, levels, width, depth and grades shown on drawing, directed
by engineers.

In weir they have to excavate up to 4m at some point by using machines such as Hitachi and caterpillar.
Quantity Estimation:
It is a process of estimating the quantities use during construction in order to prepare a bill to be paid off.
The Bill of Quantities (BOQ) is also use in

● To plan material purchasing.

● Preparing resources program.
● Cost control during the contract to ensure work within budget.

There are four defined steps in preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQ) .

● Takking off
● Squaring
● Abstracting
● Writing the bill of quantity

I use takking off for estimation of quantities. I use AutoCAD by preparing a section of particular part and
then multiply it with the with or length to find its volume.
