English Reading Intervention Plan

Second Grade Bilingual

Spring 2022

Background Information

The district transitioned from a dual bilingual program to a transitional early exit in the
2019-2020 school year. However, the language of instruction in language arts and
reading remained to be in Spanish. Students receive a high level of literacy instruction
in Spanish in the lower grades, thus impacting the English literacy development for
students to succeed in the upper grades. Research indicates that direct, explicit, and
gradual instruction in English is needed to transition second language learners into
English-only instruction. Therefore, there is a need to initiate English reading
intervention to support literacy development in students' second language.
