ASSIGNMENT- ADVANCED STRUCTURAL GLAZING

1. What are the different types of glazing system?

Curtain wall system comprises one of the elements of facade technology in high rise
building. Facades involves window wall, cladding elements and curtain walls which
generates the exterior envelope of the building.

The curtain wall systems now possess structural importance equivalent to that gained by
other structural elements of the building. As it has a higher exposure to exterior
atmosphere, it has to be properly designed, installed and maintained keeping in mind the
functionality and sustainability.

Structural Glazing can be used to create an "all-glass" façade in which the actual structure is
hidden behind the glass. Glazing in which the silicon seal is designed to transfer the stress
and to be resistant to UV radiation since there is no rebate on the edges. The structural
glazing façade technique can be used with single panes of glass, coated or non-coated
double glazing enameled glass, etc.

Benefits

 a good level of waterproofing

 excellent sound insulation
 an easy-to-clean surface
 protection for the load-bearing structure

Glass fin-supported facades still represent one of the most transparent forms of structural
glass facades, and are an especially economical solution at lower spans.

Glass-fin systems are quite simple in concept, utilizing a glass fin set perpendicular to the
glass pane at each vertical line of the glass grid. The most challenging aspect of a glass-fin
wall occurs when the span is too great to be accommodated by a single piece fin, and a
splice detail must be developed to create a fin comprised of multiple glass pieces.

Spider Glazing is a part of the frame-less glass system where they provide a flush external
appearance with uninterrupted views. Spider Glazing curtain walls provide maximum
daylight for building interiors, as well as the possibility of placing large transparent glass
surface as building envelopes.

Due to its visual attractiveness such architectural building envelopes are commonly used on
commercial buildings to create premium building skills.
Cable glazing is another type of glazing panel construction that provide substantial views. It
is an elegant glazing panels that does not need framing but it could be costly and expensive.

Due to the effect on loading on the panels, not only does cable net structural analysis is
required to be carry out accurately but also construction works need massive coordination.

Cable net walls are commonly flexible that is why they are likely to deflect extremely. This
may make occupants uncomfortable but the functionality of the building will not be
influenced and its aesthetic views would not be distorted.

2. Explain the elements of structural glazing?

 Mullion (vertical member) - provide to transfer the dead load of the curtain wall.
 Transoms (horizontal member) - aluminum section provided between the mullions.
 Silicone sealants - it is used to prevent the passage moisture, dust, air and heat
through all the joints.
 Setting blocks - used to provide support in relation to the size of glass, glazing
technique and condition of use.
 Location blocks - edge of the glass, prevent the movement of glass within the frame.

3. Explain with the help of sketches define bolted glazing?

4. Explain in detail bow truss glazing system?\

This system relies on tensile forces being transferred from the stainless steel cables
to the structure above and below.
Two cables follow a parabolic shape to resist wind loads. A discrete cable extends
down, just inside the face of the glass to carry the dead load of the glass.
Glass is generally supported on spiders with articulating bolts.
