4. Hill and Peterson, Ch. 2, #7.
1. Construct and Excel spreadsheet that computes total condition ratios (𝑇0 /𝑇, 𝑝0 /𝑝,
𝜌0 /𝜌) for a given 𝑀, and vice versa (𝑀 for a given total condition ratio). You should
allow 𝛾 to be input by the user so results for different gasses can be easily computed.
2. Flow streams of two different temperatures are mixed using the fixture shown in
Figure 1 below. The streams are air and the flow is steady. The flow exits as uniform
flow from the top at an intermediate temperature and atmospheric pressure (free jet).
The depth of the fixture into the page is 𝐵. The parameters for the geometry and inlet
flows are given in the table below.
(a) Assuming calorically perfect gas behavior, use the conservation of mass and
energy equations for a control volume to find 𝑈𝑇 , 𝑇𝑇 , and 𝜌𝑇 .
(b) Use the result of part (a) with the momentum equation for a control volume to
find the horizontal force per unit depth, 𝑓𝑥 , required to hold the fixture in place.
