Rotating Machinery Monitoring

As rotating machinery monitoring is usually delivered as part of a machine package, factory
installed, the factory acceptance tests would form Stage 1 of these procedures.

The following Stage 2 procedures are to ensure that:

• No shipping damage was incurred,

• On site installation, hook up and power up, are completed in readiness for the
machine commissioning.

These procedures can serve only as a guide and are to be used only in conjunction with the
manufacturers / vendors recommendations.

Required

• Factory Acceptance Tests and Reports completed.

• Hardware files bolted into the final position.
• Machine sensors installed and secure.
• Checklist IC-EI-064

PROCEDURE

1. Inspect instrumentation/monitor bin(s) for shipping damage.

2. Inspect all sensors, i.e. X-Y vibration, thrust, key phase, temperature, speed etc., for
shipping damage.

3. Inspect machine mounted ‘J’ boxes and proximitor housings for shipping damage.

4. Inspect sensor cabling and all cabling between ‘J’ boxes and monitor instrumentation
rack(s) for shipping damage.

5. Where any damage or loose sensors have been found, ensure that the following is carried
out:

6. Vibration, key phase or thrust sensors – remove/repair/replace. Test using proprietary test
equipment, i.e. B.N TK3 wobble-box or other suitable proprietary test equipment. Replace
sensor and set up gap voltage as per manufacturer’s instruction manual.

7. Speed sensor – remove/replace and if possible test using a rotating pulse generator. Install
using the manufacturer’s instructions to set the gap.

8. Temperature sensors – replace any damaged sensors. Check for ambient reading at the
monitor.

9. Consult with the machine vendor, and confirm that when the machine is stationary:

• Vibration probes read zero/normal (dependant on set up).

• Thrust sensor reads normal.

• Speed sensor reads zero.

Rotating Machinery Monitoring
• Temperature sensor read abient.

10. With the machine running, consult with the machine vendor and confirm that all readings
are normal, and are within the machine specifications.

11. Alert and gap alarms are set appropriately for the service function.

12. Machine trips are set appropriately for the service function.

13. Where the transmitted signals are repeated to a higher level control, the DCS engineer will
carry out the relevant checks noted below as part of the loop testing. Successful completion
of each check at the DCS should be reported over the radio and recorded on the field test
record.

14. The instrument appears on the correct graphic(s).

15. The instrument tag number in the DCS is correct.

16. The engineering units are correct.

17. The required alarm and trip actions are operating correctly.

18. All alarm messages, and status logs operate correctly, and are correctly identified within the
loop.

19. If trended, the instrument appears on the correct trend(s).

20. Disconnect the loop wiring and check for a “bad value” indication logged at the DCS.

21. Reconnect loop wiring and check for a “good value” indication logged at the DCS.

22. Carry out a drawing ‘as-built’ by annotating the wiring diagram in red pen to clearly show
how the circuit is actually wired up in comparison to the drawing. Ensure that any
differences are accounted for, and investigate further if this is not the case. Annotate the
drawings by hand as an ‘as-built,’ and record your name and date.

23. Apply red marking to marshalling panel. Disconnect the terminals to show completion of
the loop test. If any remedial action on this DCS is required, note this on the field test
record.

24. When the commissioning has successfully been completed, and all required remedial
actions have been taken, affix a site approved status label to the instrument cover to
indicate completion of commissioning. Remove any previously attached a site approved
construction tag and apply a site approved under commissioning tag.
