5.0 Introduction

Z -transform is used to convert discrete time domain into a complex

frequency domain. It is a generalized form of Fourier transform. It is
widely used in engineering as follows:

Digital Signal Processing

Control Theory
Analysis of digital filters
To find the frequency response
Analysis of discrete signals
Automatic controls in telecommunication

5.1 Definition of Z - transform

Let f (n) be a sequence defined for all positive integer n , then the Z
-transform of f (n) is defined as

n
Z f (n) f (n) z F ( z) .
n 0

where z is an arbitrary complex number.

This is called one sided Z -transform.

5. 2 Transforms and Partial Differential Equations

If f (n) is defined for n 0, 1, 2,... then

n
Z f (n) f (n) z and is called two sided Z -transform.
n

Note:

If f (n) 0 for n 0 then f (n) is called a casual sequence.

5.2 Unit Sample Sequence

The unit sample sequence (n) is defined as

1 for n 0
( n)
0 for n 0

5.3 Unit Step Sequence

The unit step sequence u ( n) is defined as

1 for n 0
u ( n)
0 for n 0

The relation between unit sample sequence and unit step sequence is

u (n) (k )
k

and (n) u(n) u (n 1)

1 if k n
we have (n k ) and
0 if k n

1 for n k 0
u (n k )
0 for n k 0

Also f ( n) f ( k ) (n k )
k

5.4 Z-transform for Discrete Values of t

If f (t ) is a function defined for discrete values of t ,

where t nT , n 0,1, 2,... , T being the sampling period, then Z -

transform of f (t ) is defined as

n
Z f (t ) f (nT ) z F ( z)
n 0

5.5 Properties of Z -transforms
