WHY CENTRE FOR SEISMOLOGY???

SEISMOLOGY is the branch of science concerned with earthquakes and

related phenomena. The Centre's objective is to improve understanding of
earthquake processes and their effects through seismological research and
monitoring. NCS is actively involved in seismological research related to
estimating shallow and deep crustal structures in various tectonic domains of
the India land mass. This research provides insight into earthquake occurrence
processes in the Himalayas, the Burma plate, and the Sumatra trench, as
well as crustal deformation measurements in the plate-boundary and plate-
interior regions.

NEED FOR A SEISMOLOGY CENTRE

Hazard – study of earthquakes and their effects, where they occur, how big and how
often (the task of a seismologist).

Vulnerability of structures – prevent collapse and minimise structural damage (the

task of an earthquake engineer).

Risk – alerts, warnings and alarms for preparation and emergency response (the
tasks of management and operating staff).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 To study sustainable building materials.

 To study sustainable site planning.
 To study energy optimization in buildings.
 To study construction management.
 To study biophilic façade treatments.
 To study thermal comfort of building.

GREEN INITIATIVE

 Keeping in view the explosive rise in energy consumption across the

globe, every new building must be an example of low energy sustainable
development.

 The goal is to attain maximum thermal comfort for the occupants through
designed building, whether it is through passive designing, building
material or envelope design treatments.
