Laura Hudson- Week #3 Journal and Hour Log:

This week has been a very good week! As written in my last journal, the residents at the

Fellowship Home were all tested for COVID-19. The results from these tests came back and all

of the residents are negative, which is a blessing! This means that our facility can go down a

level with the COVID-19, which will allow residents to have guests in the building, instead of

distant visits. Our supervisor came up with a great idea, which involves guests coming through

an outside door and sitting in a “bubble” so they can still speak with their loved one in person.

Now, these rules are more than likely going to change, as long as the staff’s tests results come

back negative. This will overall boost morale and encourage residents to be more social and get

out of their rooms.

This week I worked a 10 hour shift on Wednesday, in order to catch up on my hours. This

was exhausting, yet very rewarding. It was rewarding due to the fact that in that one day I made a

lot of personal relationships with residents. There is one resident who is in memory care, but

could be in assisted living, but she is too anxious to get out of her comfort zone. When she first

came to the facility, she was out into memory care due to her mild alzheimers and severe

depression. This depression was caused by the death of her husband two and a half years ago.

She spoke to Summer and I about these emotions and we are trying to get her to move to assisted

living so she can have more genuine friendships. Another relationship that I have formed is with

a woman in memory care, named Patsy. Patsy is overlooked by the nurses because she is the

most severe resident in the entire facility. I have started to constantly go to lunch on the memory

care side and get Patsy out of her room in order for her to have a new scenery. It is hard to talk to

her since she just blurts out random things, but I have learned to just respond to each sentence

and it makes her happy.

I also have done the usual stuff that we do this week, including: taking temperatures,

taking O2 levels, shadowing nurses, assisting with all the meals, and doing anything else that I

am asked to do. Overall, I have enjoyed this internship thus far and have made amazing

relationships with several residents. I cannot wait to see what else comes this semester and will

for sure keep up the morale and mental health in the facility!
