Journal Week #5

Last week I mentioned that the clients I have been working with have become more

aggressive with me. I wanted to reassure you that I have not been hurt, and I am safe. My

supervisor has made sure that we know the protocol when the kids do get aggressive, so I am

confident in my abilities in situations like that. I also have multiple occupational therapists and

students in the room that are prepared when a child starts to behave in an aggressive manner or

starts to attack.

This week was a really good learning experience. I have been shadowing the speech

therapists as well as the OTs recently, and it has helped me see how they are integrated. One of

the speech therapists let me lead her therapy session, and I couldn’t have been more grateful. I

learned so many different important aspects of speech and how important it is for these children.

Additionally, my supervisor made a comment about letting me lead a session with one of the

more difficult children, because that child has grown to love me. Every time she walks into the

clinic, she tries to find me first, and it has made me feel so important. I feel like I am making a

difference in her life, and that is all I could ever ask for.

The only bad experience I had this week was when one of the kids grabbed the little girl

that I was working with by the shirt and started shaking her. It took me and 2 other OTs to get

him off of her and it absolutely broke my heart. She is one of the more quiet and reserved

children, so my heart absolutely sunk. After we removed him off of her, I stood her up and took
her to the bubble room. This room is used to calm children down. It has LED lights and a huge

bubble machine that changes colors. I sat in there with her and turned the lights off, so we could

focus on the bubbles and the changing colors until she was calmed down. Afterwards, I asked her

what she wanted to do, and she said she wanted to color an alligator. The OT that I was with

printed off 2 different pictures and let her choose which one she wanted to color, and she asked

me to color with her. We took turns coloring her picture until it was time to leave. She was

finally calm by then, and I was really happy that I could help.

Overall, it was a good week despite that occurrence. Each week I have been able to build

deeper connections with each of my coworkers, and I feel like I belong there. This clinic will

definitely be one that I apply to work for when I am a future OT.
