Journal Week 3

Monday January 24th Monday morning we started off with a workout. This is something

that we try to do with the individuals at the center on a daily basis. We have two separate

workout classes with them. Each class has roughly 8 individuals. We workout with them for

about 45 minutes. The first 20 minutes we lead the class with different types of aerobics and

modify the workouts for individuals who cannot stand. The remainder of the class we workout at

different stations and assist the individuals with different machines at the center. Some may work

out on the bicep machine, while another individual may play cornhole. This is a time to get them

moving their bodies, no matter what it is. We try to make it fun for them. A few of the

individuals dislike the workout part of the day, so we have found it important to find other fun

ways to get them up and moving. Many of the individuals at the center are overweight, and one

of the reasons for this is because they feel that they are not capable of working out. This is not

true at all; we just have to find different ways for them to workout. After the workout we went to

Georgia College with the individuals and started the creative expressions programs. This was the

first week of the program for this semester, and one of our bosses wanted us to get the chance to

try out all of the creative expressions programs to find one that we wanted to be a part of. After

the creative expressions we went back to the center, and then I had to leave for one of my

classes. When I came back from class, it was time for the individuals to go home.

Tuesday January 25th, We started the day off with a workout as per usuals. After the

workout myself and a few of the other interns went with individuals to Café Central to work

volunteer at the food drive. We helped unload the truck and distributed food into boxes to hand

out to people in Baldwin County. Not only does café central hand out food that could last
families over a week, but they also run a soup kitchen that gives out one hot meal per person.

The individuals at the center who came to volunteer really enjoyed this outing. One of my

favorite aspects of the LEC is how involved they are in the community. We were at café central

for most of the day. When we came back to the center it was time for individuals to go home.

Wednesday January 26th, we began the day with a workout. Once we were done working

out, we went to Georgia college to the create expressions programs. When we were finished at

Georgia College we came back to the center, and I had to go to class. There was not really

anything that stood out to me on this day.

Thursday January 27th, if you guessed the first thing we did on this day was workout, you

would be correct! After the workout. I worked with one of the independent artists at the center.

We made homemade sugar scrubs. We used coconut oil, vitamin E oil, sugar, and essential oils.

We put the scrub in recycled bottles. We plan on selling the scrubs that she made so that she has

a way of making money on her own. One of The Life Enrichment Center’s main focuses is to

help the individuals to be as independent as the possibly can be. Helping the individual create

something that she can call her own was an enjoyable experience. The next step is to advertise

her product so that she has a market to sell the product to. Working on this project took up most

of the day!

Friday January 28th, Fun Friday!! Many of the other interns prepared a meal for the

individuals at the center. They cooked a chicken tortilla soup and sweet potatoes. They used food

that we were able to take back with us from previous food drives that we volunteered at. I was

not apart of this, because I went with another group to the darkroom at Georgia college to create

a develop a photo. We each had our own fake flower and semi-gloss paper and created a

photograph using the dark room. It was a very interesting process, and one that I have never done
before. The individuals and myself really enjoyed this outing. When we got back to the center it

was time to eat lunch, and then the individuals went home. It was definitely a fun Friday! I am

interested in learning more about photo development throughout the semester.
