Journal week 3

This week I did a lot of program planning and community outreach for the clinic. I went

out and continued to give out and place flyers and brochures for the clinic’s annual 5k the “run

like a mom”. I also was able to sit in and shadow for a few counseling sessions with expecting

fathers. Each one had a different feeling or perspective on their partner being pregnant and it was

interesting to see how the session goes as well as how this fatherhood program reaches them.

The annual 5k that the clinic runs are to help with fundraising more resources for the low-

income mother’s they support. It also helps create awareness that there is a safe place for

mothers and fathers to go. One of the privileges that I get to have when marketing for the clinic

for their 5k is interacting with the local community so far for many of the businesses and people

I have met they are aware of women’s Hope and or have worked with some of the staff members

who have been here. One thing I did notice when interacting with the community was there

wasn’t as much awareness of the service provided for father’s or some people though that the

clinic and its events were exclusively for women. A problem that I am thinking about bringing

up to my supervisor and staff members who assign task. However, I am worried about

overstepping my boundaries as I am only an intern.

I am also enjoying the counseling sessions as I have gotten to see multiple sides and

reactions from fathers when they find out their partner is pregnant. Each one is nervous, but I

have found out that even if they didn’t feel ready there was a little excitement and an interest in

them wanting to be a father. This is a narrative I thought was very interesting as many of the men
would love to be a father especially those that did not have one present growing up, but it was

fear and lack of confidence in being able to support their partner and/or child that kept them from

fulfilling that. This clinic through these sessions that are to span from the first testing to 20

months old are there to help build and develop that father with the necessary support, skills, and

confidence to be that parent.
