Narrative Week 4

We finally did not have extra classes this week, which was nice, so we were able to play

more in the gym. We first started playing ultimate football to get the students familiar with the

sport as we were going to transition into our flag football unit. The kids had a lot of fun with this,

and even the girls would play some. That is one thing that has been challenging while interning

here. So many students have become so apathetic to do anything and complacent losing points if

it means they can just sit and do nothing. I decided to step out of my comfort zone this week, and

I actually played with a few of the classes to encourage students to play who did not normally

participate. It was fun to play with the students, and it has helped me get to know some of them

better. As I took attendance this week, I have felt more confident than any other week as I am

finally remembering names with faces. I definitely underestimated how hard it was to remember

students and now I understand why it would take my professors so long to get to know me.

There were a few things that were out of the ordinary from previous weeks at Oak Hill

Middle. First, we had a fire drill which took me by surprise, because I was not told there was

going to be one that day. It went very well and more smoothly than I would have guessed going

into one. The kids listened and behaved pretty well, and there were no fights that broke out.

Another crazy thing that happened was a bird got stuck inside the gym for a couple of hours. We

propped the door open, but it could not figure out how to escape. I am not sure what happened to

it since it was still stuck inside when I left. I did not see it the day, however, so I assume it made

it out. It has taken time to adjust but as each day continues forward, I have become more and

more comfortable at my internship. I really do look forward to seeing the students and talking

with them, and it has been such a privilege to get to know them. I never know what the day is

going to entail, but there is always something new that is exciting and something I can learn

from.
