Monday February 14, Valentine’s Day! We started the day off with an intern/staff
meeting. We discussed the alternative spring break that we are planning for the individuals and
discussed what our week would look like. I was very grateful to have this meeting because it
gave me some clarity on what to expect for the week. It is a step in the right direction as far as
organization is concerned. After the meeting we went to centennial and went to the outdoor ed
class. After Outdoor Ed we did practiced our step-in-time routine. After step everyone went back
to the center and had lunch. Later that afternoon the interns and a few of the staff wen to Habitat
and picked up windows to build a greenhouse with. We unloaded them, and then went back a
second time to get the rest of the windows. I am excited to see how the greenhouse will turn out.
Tuesday February 15, the start of the morning was kind of slow for me. It is nice to
have an hour or so where I do not have a planned activity. This gives me the chance to interact
with individuals who I am not around as much. At 9:45 we loaded up to go to bodyplex for the
aerobics class. This class was a dancing aerobics class. As I have mentioned previously, the
individuals who attend this class absolutely love it. After the aerobics class we headed back to
the center. We had lunch and then I went back to bodyplex with an individual to do personal
Wednesday February 16th, this is a crazy busy day. We start of by going to Georgia
College for the creative expressions program. The first one I go to with individuals is Jungle
Royals. I play guitar and was able to work with an individual on the chords and strumming
pattern for the song they will be preforming. Playing music is a passion of mine, so it was really
cool to get to use that skill to help another individual. After Jungle Royal we went to Music in
Motion, the individuals have completed the first song that they will be preforming. This week we
will being practicing the second song. After creative expressions we went back to the center for
lunch and then I left for class. I found out my test score for the exam I mentioned in my last
journal and made a really good grade on it! That was very encouraging for me.
Thursday February 16th, we started the day off by going to Community Baptist Church
and doing our nutrition class. The individuals made pizza on mini tortilla shells. We cut all the
veggies out for them and asked what they wanted to put on their pizza. We placed the ingredients
on plates for each individual to build their own pizza. This was a great way to let them be
independent and proud of the food that they created themselves. I believe that they all enjoyed
this. We discussed healthier ways to eat otherwise unhealthy food and talked about the
nutritional benefits of each ingredient. After Nutrition we headed back to the center. When
everyone arrived back at the center we played a few brain games. I went to bodyplex with an
Friday February 17th, Fun Friday! We started the day off with Step-in-Time. This is
my least favorite program at the center. I am not a good dancer, and really do not feel that I
contribute much to this. All of the interns are in charge of this program, but it is just not my cup
of tea. After step I went with one of the staff, and a group of individuals to GC&SU for
photography. We each developed our own photo from a negative. They turned out great. I am
excited to go back this upcoming Friday to see the final results. After Photography we went back
to the center and had lunch. After lunch I spent time with the individuals. That sums up my
week!
