Important points for Roof Truss Designs

Pitches of Trusses
Roof Covering Pitch
1 Corrugated GI Sheets 1/3 to 1/6
2 Corrugated AC Sheets 1/6 to 1/12
Lapped Shingles (Eg. Wood, Asphalt,
3 1/24 to 1/12
Clay and Tiles)
4 Flat roof and Trapezoidal Trusses 1/48 to 1/12
Note : For snow load 1/4 are suitable.
Where snow load doesnot occur, lower pitches up to 1/6 are suitable.
Lower pitches are advantageous sinc the wind pressure on the roof is reduced.
Depth of Truss
Approximate
Sr. No. System Approximate Span Range Typical Span
Depth (m)
(m)
1 Decking L/30 to L/50 Depth 1.5 - 4 3
2 Wide Flange Beams L/18 to L/28 Depth 3 - 20 9
3 Plate Girders L/15 to L/20 Depth 7.5 - 24 12.5
4 Open-Web Girders L/18 to L/22 Depth 7 - 35 18
5 Fink Truss L/5 to L/6 Depth 10 - 18 15
6 Howe or Pratt or Fan truss L/5 to L/6 Depth 10 - 15 12
7 Bowstring Truss L/6 to L/10 Depth 18 - 36 24
8 Trapezoidal Truss L/8 to L/12 Depth 18 - 36 24
9 3-D Latticed Truss L/4 to L/15 Depth 22 - 45 30
10 Arches L/3 to L/5 Depth 18 - 55 36
11 Double Layer Grids L/12 to L/20 Depth 10 - 35 25
Note : Roof Depth in range of 1/12th to 1/8th of Span for continuous trusses will be economical.
Simply supported trusses should be somewhat deeper, perhaps about 1/10th span as minimum.
Lower pitches are advantageous sinc the wind pressure on the roof is reduced.
Spacing of Truss
Note : Economical range range of spacing is 1/5 to 1/3 of Span.
Simply supported trusses should be somewhat deeper, perhaps about 1/10th span as minimum.
Spacing of 3 - 4.5 m for spans upto 15 m and 4.5 - 6 for spans of 15 - 30 m may result economy.
For long Span trusses (About 45 m In span), spacing 12 - 15 m will be more economical.
Spacing of Purlins
Note : For corrugated GI Sheets purlin spacing may vary from 1.5 m to 1.75 m.
For corrugated AC Sheets purlin spacing is limited to 1.4 m (6mm Thick sheets)
For corrugated AC Sheets purlin spacing is limited to 1.6 m (7mm Thick sheets)
For long Span trusses (About 45 m In span), spacing 12 - 15 m will be more economical.
