1. INTRODUCTION

- Objective : By the end of this course, students should be able to


a) Fine-tune their oracy and writing skills as they are introduced to advanced aspects
of business administration.
b) Write Business English more confidently and appropriately in selected business
contexts.
c) Develop their communication skills through computer-aided learning.
d) Write effective application, motivation and cover letters for oil and gas companies
and sign them electronically.
e) Use collocations and the appropriate oil and gas register in business contexts and
in petroleum context.

- Course content 
This course is designed to hone the appropriate linguistic skills and competence
students need to sound professionally correct. Therefore, the topics are carefully
chosen and geared towards grooming students with a view to satisfying linguistic roles
that would be given to them when employed in any sector of the petroleum industry.
They will study the rhetorical principles and practices required for cover letters in
professional contexts, master some petroleum and gasoline registers as well as employ
them when communicating orally or in writing. Similarly, they will be introduced to
writing emails as well as figures and amounts of money in various currencies in
English. To ensure students derive maximum benefits from this course, they would be
required to allot a considerable amount of their time to doing advance research on
topics indicated in the presentation segment (daily forecast) before lessons commence,
cultivate the habit of reading materials in relevant textbooks, make the most of on-line
materials both individually and collaboratively. This way they would obtain materials
which would improve their communication skills.

1. PRE-REQUISITE

Students are supposed to have acquired, at least, Beginner level course (AI-A2) and
Lower Intermediate English level course (A2-B1).

Day 1: Self-introduction, Computer-aided English learning & US vs UK English.
Day 2: Writing electronic mails (E-mail)
Day 3: Types of jobs and positions in oil and gas industry. ORION TALENT (YouTube video)
Day 4: Writing Cover letter for jobs in the petroleum industry
Day 5: CLASS TEST. THIS WOULD DE BASED ON THE YOUTUBE VIDEO: “HERE’S WHAT
DRIVES THE PRICE OF OIL / CNBC”
Day 6: Vocabulary & Collocations on petroleum
Day 7: Writing Figures mathematically and in words
Revision
END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION
