TOPIC: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Today the phrase Emotional Intelligence has got a good place in corporate
world. Education are focusing on training the learners to develop their
Emotional Intelligence. But the scenario is not or bright at the earlier stages of
the educational system. It appears that the students up to undergraduate level are
rarely guided to manage their heightened emotionality in varied of situations.
Failing which the child or student is instructed plainly 'you should not be so lose
temper or you must learn to control your anger'. Even the child or student is
chastised by the parents or teachers at times. All educationists have emphasized
in one or the other way that the ultimate goal of Education is all-round
development of the personality. An infant comes in this world with certain
inherited personality traits. In the early period of life, the child does not exhibit
a particular form of personality. Gradually the infant begins to gain a specific
form of behaviour patterns and a specific personality begins to emerge. There
are various influences from the surroundings which shape the personality of an
individual.

To achieve the goal of all-round development of an individual all the three

domains i.e. Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor should be paid due
attention. School is the place where the disciples are trained properly for their
physical, emotional, intellectual as well as spiritual development. It is the
formal education system and commonly accepted way for development of
personality. A child passes a long duration of 14 years from the beginning of
schooling till the terminus of the school education. Thus it is the responsibility
of the school to take care of the development of one's personality during this
important period of life. But we feel that the school as well as family are lacking
in performing this significant role. In other words, it can be said that it is a
primary need to make efforts to develop the Emotional Intelligence of the
students especially before and during adolescent period.

Feeling of emotions is not a negative sign or the sign of weakness. It is healthy

for the mind, body and heart to experience emotions when they arise.
Concealment of emotions eventually becomes a source of abnormal behaviour
and psychological problems. Suppressed emotions are manifested in self-
destructive ways. These eventually rise to the surface causing ailments and
unexpected emotional outbursts. Emotions when handled appropriately enable
the individual to respond wisely in difficult environmental situations.

It is observed that some learning difficulties and various problems related to

maladjustment with surrounding conditions either in family, schools, and
colleges or at workplace show their origin in poor emotional awareness in early
childhood.

The rapidly increasing incidences of violent crime, strikes, teenage drug abuse,
marital strife, low morals and ethics can be attributed to low level of Emotional
intelligence whereas expressions of empathy, endurance, continence,
cooperation, altruism, optimism, adaptability, trustworthiness, conscience have
been considered as the indicators of higher Emotional Intelligence. The teacher
is the important personality who plays the significant role in life of the students.

So it is very important to train the individuals appropriately at this transitional

stage of their life. These efforts will consequently help in developing proper
emotional intelligence. among people from childhood. This will surely help in
bringing mutual emotional understanding, empathy and to lead a better life in
peace and cooperation with improved efficiency. Thus the emotions can become
a potential for leading a successful life and the school must be a key place for
schooling and training of emotions for giving a successful individual to the
society and nation.
SELF- REFLECTION

I learnt about critical analysis of text which demonstrated my critical-

thinking. Critical analysis is the detailed examination and evaluation of
another person's ideas or work. It is subjective writing as it expresses my
interpretation and analysis of the work by breaking down and studying its
parts. Good critical analysis evaluates the ideas or work in a balanced way
that highlights its positive and negative qualities. For recreating a text from
new perspective I should have a good understanding of the work that I am
analysing before writing.
I will Incorporate this learning of recreating texts activity by asking
questions about each paragraph as they work through the text. The questions
can be designed to enhance comprehension; using Bloom’s Taxonomy as a
guide can be highly effective so that students have the opportunity to move
beyond basic comprehension and are also required to apply, analyse,
evaluate, and create in some way by what they are being asked. Questions
can also focus on form and style so that students see why the author chose to
express or write in a specific way.
