CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text

Key Points: Climate, Summarize, Northeast region, land, water

Before Reading
Anticipatory We will be starting fresh with the topic of regions as we wrapped up the unit on
Set/Hook government in the previous lesson. Today we will start talking about regions of
the United States starting with the Northeast. I will also talk about how we are
talking about our final comprehension strategies which are summarizing and
synthesizing. This strategy connects a lot with determining importance as we
have to find important details to note in our summaries. Summarizing also allows
us to ignore irrelevant information along with how to integrate central ideas in
important ways. The students have talked about the Northeast region in class
before this lesson. I will ask them about what states are in this region and have a
picture in front of them as reference (pictures are great for ELL students)

I will hand out to each student of the group a summarizing worksheet along with
a copy of the article. I will demonstrate how to use the worksheet then we will
do one together before we work in pairs. I will read aloud the section of the
Northeast region article about land and water.
-I will explain the first question on the worksheet, in one sentence, write what
the main idea is. The main idea of this section is: The Northeast region is made
up of eleven states and within those states there are important lands along with
significant waterways.
-Question two asks for one or two sentences about the important details (these
should correlate with the main idea). These sentences can be as follows:
Northeast region is filled with a variety of different lands like valleys, rolling hills,
and low mountains which include the Appalachian mountains. Also, there are
important waterways like the Erie Canal that connect the Great Lakes to the
Atlantic Ocean.
Prior to completing number three, I will explain to the students on how to build a
proper summary using the important information we have pulled from our
sections. With number three we combine our sentences, but sometimes we
need to use additional sentences and words to make the paragraph to make it
flow.
-Question three is to put those sentences together to make our summary. Make
sure the students use their own words.
● Reading Skill or Strategy:
● Comprehension Skill or Fluency : Summarizing and Synthesizing
Name: Jaime Jones

● Vocabulary: Northeast region, summarize, synthesize, climate

Learning Target I Can: pull out important information from the text to create a summary.
I Can: use different comprehension strategies to get an understanding of the
northeast region.
During Reading
During reading Now, the students and I will work together using the article (section about climate)
to create a summary using the worksheet.

I will read the section out loud and then ask the students what they felt was the
main point of the section. Then after, ask how we can put that into a sentence.
Next, we will look for important details and ask the students what details are
important. We will then formulate two sentences. Last, we will combine the
sentences to create our summary.

I will ask the students if they understand what to do for the summarizing worksheet
and if there are any questions.

After Reading
For our final lesson, I will pair up the students to create a summary together from the products and
natural resource section. The students will do exactly what we did above and fill out the summarizing
worksheet. They can choose to read it aloud together or independently (depends on how they do
best). If one partner does better out loud and the other independently, I will read articles out loud to
that student or students who need it (partnership is great for students who are ELL). Once they read it,
the students will work together to create their summaries. Once finished, they should choose one
partner to read aloud their summary. We will have a discussion after.

Reading Skill or Strategy:

Comprehension Skill or Fluency: Summarizing and Synthesizing
Vocabulary:

Check for understanding:

Understanding will be checked by doing a Kahoot. These four questions will be asked:

-Which of the following is an important waterway in the Northeast region?

-What type of weather is in the Northeast region?

-True or False: Summarizing allows us to ignore irrelevant information and ways to integrate central
ideas.

-Which state of the Northeast is highlighted red?

Closure: I will remind and reflect on what we discussed about the Northeast region of the United States
along with the final strategy of synthesizing and summarizing.

Next Steps: This is the final lesson I will be providing the students. They should be able to use all the
strategies that were taught to them to comprehend texts that they read in the future.

Reflection: What went well? What surprised you about the lesson? What changes can you make for
next time? Who needs what reinforcement?

-This lesson went the best out of all my lessons. The students were most familiar with this strategy and
felt confident in their summarizing skills. The teacher multiple times spoke about the students finding
main ideas and important details as some were having difficulties with pulling out important details. So, I
thought this activity was perfect to cover that and the social studies topic of regions. What surprised me
was how hard the students will work when they know they get to play a Kahoot game. It was the most
concentrated they have been through all my lesson plans. There is nothing I would change besides
having students fully working independently, however this lesson plan I had them be partners as a way
to make it ELL. The students preferred working alone but they did have great discussions with each other
before writing their summaries.

● What was done with the tutees and why (i.e., the strategies and activities presented and/or
reviewed)?

○ I introduced the lesson by describing what summarizing is and how it is beneficial. Also
we included a discussion on how determining importance can be incorporated into
summarizing. Next, each student was provided with an article about the northeast
region. I modeled how to create a summary based on the first section of land and water
using the summarizing worksheet. Next, we did one together and had a discussion about
it. Then finally students partnered off and did one together. We wrapped it by checking
their understanding by doing a Kahoot game.

● Consider how the lesson proceeded and if the goals and objectives of the lesson were met.

○ The goals and objectives were met by the students receiving excellent scores on their
checking understanding. Students participated in discussion and their summaries were
fluent. Students were able to explain the importance of summarizing and how they used
that strategy multiple times before. Students reflected on information of the Northeast
region and added additional information due to them covering it in class.

● How the tutees reacted to the lesson as a whole, what was successful and what less so?

○ The students did well with participating in the lesson. I always cover what we are going
to do for the day and the students were more concentrated and on task when they knew
they were going to play Kahoot instead of writing answers to the question I had in that
lesson. This lesson overall was more successful than the others with behaviors. Students
were actively engaged and on task.

● How the lesson would be adapted for future?

○ Knowing now that the students use summarizing a lot throughout their school year, it’s
safe to say that they can continually use the skills they learned throughout the rest of
their school life. It was a great practice for them and they will be able to use the
redefining of their summarizing skills for future lessons they participate in.
