SUCCESS IN THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION

Being a successful construction engineer starts at

something, and that something is the person itself. Like also
in life, to achieve goals, one has to have concrete
foundations. The individual should have the power to be the
captain on his journeys, but it’s not defined not only by
collecting trophies or anything of the sort but, by many
things. Because success can be defined in various ways. Having
to control the change in the odds in one’s favor is the most
worthwhile success an individual can achieve. It is said that
to attain this, a person must have the following. The first
is gaining pleasant family relations and an appropriate
circle of friends. For this reason, alienation cannot do you
any good. Second, is having a satisfactory amount of income,
not only to support your family and significant others but,
also to fulfill your duty as an individual. Third, having a
good reputation in all aspects of life. Fourth, gaining the
respect of colleagues and friends. Lastly, is self-respect.
Acceptance of one’s own beliefs, getting in line with
yourself.

Having a good character shapes a person into achieving

his goals. This is because of one’s own will to be
responsible, exerting efforts, with a little influence from
friends or family. Of course, this can’t be attained if one
is troubled by his health. As the saying goes, “health is
wealth,” because how can one focus on his career if his
condition hinders his capacity to do his best. As much as
possible, care for your health, this includes your body, mind,
and soul. All of these things should be in sync. With these,
you can use your time productively and apply what you have
been doing in everyday life to work. For instance, you are
very much concerned about your hygiene, this only means that
you are well aware of the healthy standards personally and
publicly. As an engineer, it is your responsibility to promote
good public health.

Education is very well available for everybody. There

are public libraries that are located in each locality. If
one is eager to learn, he can. Take note also that experience
is the best teacher one can ever have. Through personal
observation and having the perseverance to learn new things.
This will teach you to grasp every opportunity that will come
your way.

Acknowledge the circumstances that comes to your way.

These will test your overall competitiveness, and how you can
handle a certain situation and work your way out of it towards
completion. The research was conducted in the year 1915, with
a sample of over 5,000 practicing engineers. It showed that
most of them showed six dominant characteristics, of how they
can excel in their careers. These six are namely the following
arranged from the highest percentage. First, character,
integrity, resourcefulness, responsibility, and initiative.
Second, judgment and common sense. Third, efficiency and
accuracy. Fourth, understanding of men, and executive
ability. Fifth, knowledge of the fundamentals. And lastly,
the technique of practice and business. Another research
conducted in the year 1948 showed also the 6 most important
characteristics. These are the following, arrangements are
based on their level of attendance. Intelligence,
dependability, organizational acceptability, energy,
emotional acceptability, and lastly, physical acceptability.
The research conducted has similarities, for instance,
Intelligence is the main factor to lead a successful
engineering path. For if one is clever, he can see his
objective and what must be done to achieve it, while also
being truthful and doing the right things. Everything will
come to an end, especially going to school but, practically
speaking, not all things are taught in school. Some are just
being introduced, when it comes to applying your learning to
real work of design and construction. It is easier to find or
solve problems in class setup but, compared to the actual
work, one must be able to choose the right approach and
consideration to make, to construct a safe and durable
structure. A successful engineer must have a good sense of
judgment. Because a decision is very important in his line of
work. One mistake can ruin your profession and at the same
time endanger the life of other people. Creating a good
verdict must be based on a correct theory with a supported
wide range of practice experience.

One project cannot be completed by the engineer alone,

he must work with different people with different fields of
expertise. You must let them do what they can to help, because
it is the engineer’s job also to ensure that the project will
be finished as soon as possible, by all means. Being
domineering should be the last resort, because to create a
healthy workplace, not only for the engineer but for
everybody, being polite and courteous is the best way. It is
the easiest way to make people do things, because they want
to and not because they are forced to. For this reason, also
they can perform their work as accurately and productive as
they can be. As an engineer, critically handling a situation
as well as the people can affect their degree of accuracy and
completion of the project successfully.

What you appear in real life will reflect your

personality. If one wants to appear professional, dress like
one. In this kind of profession, a good appearance and good
demeanor are indications of intelligence and energy. Even
through the busiest time, the choice of your appearance is
important because it is not only of the clothing but it shows
your attitude. A well-balanced man is also defined by how
suitable he chooses his work clothes.

An aspiring engineer must avoid being late on

everything. This is a red flag quality that must be avoided,
not only you are wasting your energy, time, and resources but
also other people’s, such as your employer and colleagues.
This will decrease the opportunities that will come your way
because of your neglect. In connection with this, he shall
also dedicate his attention to labor during work hours. Being
aware of things that must be avoided and the distractions.
Another good quality to have is having good concentration.
Having the capacity to look for solutions to any problem is
an asset, every employer is looking for. Not only it is time-
saving but, also work can be done accurately. This must be
practiced by every individual, for it can help them in their
line of work, not just engineering. Many will be surprised
with the things that can be accomplish in a short amount of
time. While also taking note, that sleep must be also be seen
as the worth of time, because your body needs to receive
adequate sleep.
 Being biased in work can happen especially in
influences by experience, knowledge, and educational
background. Many could tell but, the hardest part is for the
person himself to recognize his fault. In this case, the
engineer must do all his efforts to evaluate the situation
and make sure it does not affect his work negatively. An
engineering achievement to be considered is when a mature
idea was applied in real life and succeeded. Which later on,
be used as a basis for future projects that can be also
adjusted based on the condition needed. Being flexible to
adjust and create modifications based on the local condition
is also good quality. For there is a solution to every local
engineering problem. An engineer must avoid by all means bias
of personal interest. Because as a professional, it should
not cloud your judgment, that could lead to many more serious
problems. It is also the responsibility of the engineer to
share his expertise, not only in construction but also in
finance. Making sure that it can be possible to finance and
therefore can be classed as a success. The types and finances
are namely the following. Economic Selection, Economic
Management, Economic Expediency, and Economic Worth.

An engineer must invest in his improvement. Especially

when starting in his career. It is essential to collaborate
with fellow engineers to learn, share ideas, and measure
capabilities. To find out what more about areas you need to
improve. Graduating from school doesn’t mean you have all the
capabilities you need to be a successful engineer, because
learning never stops. Listen to discussions, and study
technical papers to get a proper idea of current engineering
practice. Constantly seek information, for the reason that,
you can acquire more experience and opportunities along the
way. For these opportunities also have requirements, they
need a special set of knowledge that is critically needed in
the engineering field.
