INTRODUCTION

6
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

In current time dish or any utensils are washed by the jet spraying repetitive
water cycles. We have to scrub first by hands to all utensils and then just put
them in machine, that’s it. To solve that issue, we thought a design in which
utensil will scrub by dishwasher itself & it will also reduce to washing time too.
This design is mainly focused to clean utensils like plates & patella. Currently,
dishwasher takes time about 45-60 mins. In our design same amount of dishes
& patella can be washed in 25-30 mins. We are using scrubbing rollers to clean
dishes & 1 big scrubbing sphere to clean patella.

Dishwasher is one of a very useful machine. By this machine, person’s energy

is lot less used. In old days washing dishes is done by flat plane scrubber and
tub filled with water. But now, the time that person spend on washing dishes
was reduced. Because of it this machine is lot popular in western countries.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

1. To study the performance of dishwashing parameters.

2. To remove the problem of not cleaning oily utensils.
3. To determine whether or not automatic methods of dishwashing in the
home saved time.
4. Removing the hand scrubbing technique for cleaning.
5. Person’s hands don’t get harmed or dried after washing dishes for long.

NOMENCLATURE

Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Conveyor Belt:-

It will collect the utensil and take it through dishwasher with the help of
leather belt and motor. We are using 2 sets of belts. One for dishes & another
for other.

Nozzles:-

There will total 10 or 11 wide spread nozzles which 2 will be focused on

bottom belt’s inner side of utensil (bottom of washer) with a rotating plate & 2
in middle of 2 belts.

Cleaning Brush & Roller:-

8
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

This brush will be at sufficient size to clean any size of utensil, it will
move up, down & rotate to clean. And rollers which rotate at the opposite side
of dish movement.

Proximity Sensor:-

We are using Inductive Proximity Sensor because it can detect metal

objects. This sensor will detect that utensil is in place and ready to wash, then
by it brush and bottom nozzle will move upward. Using inductive sensor.

Tanks:-

9
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

In this there will total of 3 tanks. One will have clean water, second will
have mixture of washing liquid and water & third will store the waste water
which will created after wash.

Pumps:-

Using pump to deliver water to the all nozzles.

PROBLEMS OCCURRED

1. First, we are just going to wash only patella. Then we update the design
to also make it compatible for dish washing.
2. Stainless steel was so expensive to use in project, so we decided to use
aluminium.
3. Utensil can move from the positions, so we made slight changes to
prevent it.
4. Normal proximity sensor can stop working when it comes in contact to
water, so we will use IP68 certified sensors.
5. Water could leak from bottom side of design where sphere scrubber
arrangement is, so now we cover those gaps by plastic sheets.

METHODOLOGY

12
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

 In our design we are planning to wash oily utensils, for it we planned to

wash/scrub dishes by 5 big size plane scrubber (Scotch Brite) which will
be placed in the form of rollers.
 For patella, we planned to use scrubber same but it will place in spherical
form.
 Rollers will roll in the opposite side from utensil will move forward to
avoid slippage of utensil from belt.
 To get to know the position of patella, we will add proximity sensor of
IP68 rating.
 Scrubbing of patella will done as scrubber will rotate on single axis.

Reinventing The Dishwasher:

13
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

One of the most often used tools in a residential kitchen is the cook's favorite
pot or pan, but many dread washing the dishes by hand. Even those who own a
dishwasher often chose to handwash their cookware, whether due to space
issues in the dishwasher or due to the aggressive methods used in modern
dishwashers. Dishwashers aren’t necessarily run after each meal, but a certain
pot or pan may be needed for both lunch and dinner, requiring an immediate
wash. By the end of our project we hope to have created a device that will
simulate hand washing and allow these kinds of cookware to be mechanically
washed. With our timeline and budget in mind, we narrowed our scope to
successfully complete the project within one semester. Nonstick frying pans are
used nearly every day in many kitchens, but few people know that their coatings
may be damaged if subjected to the high temperature and pressure inside a
dishwasher. Therefore, we have decided to focus on successfully cleaning
nonstick pans with our prototype.

Primary Product Development of a compact dishwasher:

The main target with this thesis work is to define a new design for the door of a
compact dishwasher and verifying its feasibility. The work is carried out as a
part of a primary development project and the outcome will be integrated with
the further project activities run by the primary development team, and later
delivered to product development. Deliverables of the project are product
design and verification of the design from both technical and usability point of
view. In more specific manner this leads to delivering specifications, drawings
for the parts, a functional prototype with working mechanism, indication on
materials to be used, production process and preliminary cost evaluation.

Design Of A Household Dishwasher:

14
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

User survey:

User survey was done with both the dishwasher users, non users and the maids.
Also the kitchen layouts, the various appliances that are kept in the kitchen, the
kind of utensils that are used, and their quantity were studied. Availability of
space in the kitchen was carefully observed for it gave me key insights for
designing my dishwasher.

Manual dishwashing Insights from maids and housewives:

Maid washes quickly and is cheap. Comes once a day. Maid does not wipe dry
the dishes. Common complaint is that maid uses more detergent and traces of it
remain after washing. Nearly 100 litres of water is consumed per wash. 4 kg of
detergent or 3 vim bars are consumed every month. Maid never works at night.
Utensils that are used at night are washed by the maid next day. Some do the
night dishes themselves. Dishes are most of the times pre rinsed and kept before
the maid comes Tough to clean vessels of rice, milk and frying pans are soaked
before cleaning. Hot water is never used. They think there is no space in the
kitchen. Working couples find it inconvenient to keep a maid Those who do the
dishes themselves at least once, want to have a dishwasher.

Activity analysis:

Lots of wastage of water, as it is kept running during washing. Running water

rinses the other dishes in the sink Bai generally uses excessive detergents than
the lady of the house. Tendency is to scrub and wash dishes in batches of two
or three. She is in a hurry to complete the job at hand and move to a new house
Bai can inspect dishes and if they are not clean can scrub them again. Wire
scrubs are used to clean tava and kadai. They also need more application of

15
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

force. Sink in the kitchen is always loaded with dishes. Milk vessels are
scrapped with a spoon. Inside of glasses is difficult to scrub. Two large vessels
are always there per washing. The smaller items like spoons and katoris and
small plates are more tedious to wash than the larger items. This is an indication
that priority must be given to smaller items than a few big ones in the
dishwasher. Body language of the lady of the house reveals that she hates doing
that chore. Feels tired and exhausted after the job is done It can take nearly an
hour to finish all the dishes depending upon how many batches are washed
together.

Semi Automatic Cleaners for Utensils:

In traditional washing of dish, first step is to clear the wastage food on plate and
then scrub it with detergent. Here also, we are following same first step in
which the dirty dish which has to be wash is put in first washing chamber.
Where scrubbing & washing of dish takes place Dish put on the conveyor belt is
operated by using universal motor. The motor stops when dish enters in
washing chamber. Universal motor is operated with delay of specific time
interval and entire operation of system is controlled by using microcontroller. In
this chamber, firstly pressurized spray of detergent water is thrown on dish with
the help of nozzles. The operation performed with help of water pump.
Pressurized detergent water clears dish with the waste food. Simultaneously
brush assembly operates which moves the brushes down and starts scrubbing of
dish. The up & down movement of brush assembly is operated by DC geared
motor controlled according to logic program given to microcontroller. These
complete operations are to be carried out in stipulated time span set by
microcontroller. After that the conveyor belt moves again in forward directions
automatically to move dish to second washing chamber. The semi-automatic
dish washer incorporates the mechanisms used in fully automatic washing

16
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

machines as well as the one using hand washing to ensure effective washing of
dishes with the delay provided by microcontroller.

Automatic Dishwashing Machine:

In this project, this system consists of three sections first is scrubbing, second is
rinsing, and third is cleaning. A conveyor belt mechanism is used to execute the
dish washing process scrubber is attached to a motor which rotates and cleans
the dishes. A spray pump is used to wash the dishes after scrubbing process. A
cleaner or sponge is attached to a dc motor along conveyor line to dry the
dishes. Thus the cleaning gets complete. Conveyor passes the washed dishes
while waster water is collected separately. All the water gets collected at one
place because of innovative collector design. The IR sensor along with its signal
conditioning circuit is used for counting the number of dishes and also it is used
for monitor of dishes whether it comes under specific section or not. If dish is
undetected that particular section is in off state. The number of dishes cleaned
shall be shown on LCD this is done with help of IR sensor.

Thus we have designed and built prototype model for washing the dishes
automatically. The prototype of the dishwashing machine is built and tested in
laboratory for three sections which gives satisfactory results. This saves lot of
time and man power. Improved water efficiency also means less detergent can
be used which indirectly saves money. Our system is eco-friendly. And no
experts are required to operate the machine.

SIMULATION

17
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Actual project before the start of washing process.

Then both utensils will go inside on conveyor belt which will be moved by 2
stepper motor each.

18
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Then first section will take place in which fresh water will be jet sprayed on
both utensils to fulfil first step of washing utensils.

Then dish will go towards 5 rollers which will do scrubbing process & patella
will go towards its scrubbing process. At this time both utensils will be jet
sprayed by soap & water solution.

19
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Then proximity sensor (inductive) will detect it and will send signals to aurdino
& it will stop the stepper motor which is operating bottom conveyor belt.

Then hydraulic will push the bottom scrubbing part and 1 stepper motor
upward, to make scrubber get contact with utensil.

20
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Actual vertical movement of scrubber. And after this scrubber plate will rotate
for scrubbing. After 10 rotation scrubber will again will go down.

And utensil will go forward for next & final step which spraying fresh water
again on utensil.

21
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Fresh Water will be sprayed again to remove all soap solution.

Utensils are completely cleaned now.

CALCULATION

MOTOR SELECTION

We know,

Where, P = Power in kW

N = Speed in rpm,

T = Torque in Nm

Torque = Force x Perpendicular distance

Force = (Load applied on the rack + Mass of shaft) x Gravitational force

Let assume, the average load applied on the rack will be 10kg, the mass of rack
will be 4kg and mass of shaft be 1kg.

Force = (10 + 4 + 1) x 9.81 = 147.15N

Perpendicular distance = 20cm = 0.2m

Torque = 147.15 x 0.2 = 29.48

Power = 0.0771kW = 0.10hp

PSI

V = Velocity of the jet

D=diameter of the jet,

A = area of cross-section of the jet

= π/4 d²

We know,

mass/sec = ρ * A * V

23
Utensil Scrubbing Dishwasher DYP SOE

Fx = ρ *A * V (V-0)

Fx= ρ A V²

The value of density (ρ) of water = 1000 kg/m³

We have,

d = diameter of jet = 200 mm = 0.02m

a) Area of jet A = π/4 d²

= π/4 (0.02)2= 3.14x10ˉ⁴ m²

b) Flow rate Q = 30 lit/min

= 5x10ˉ⁵ m³/s

Since there are four jets, the flow rate is divided by 4

Q1=Q2=Q3=Q4= 1.25x10ˉ⁵ m³/s

c) Velocity of jet Q = A x V

1.25x10ˉ⁵= 3.14x10ˉ⁴ x V V=0.0398 m/s

d) Force exerted by jet F = ρaV²

= 1000 x 3.14x10ˉ⁴x 0.0398² = 4.9738 x 10ˉ⁴N

We know that,

e) Pressure required through jet Pressure (P) = F/A

=4.9738 x 10ˉ⁴/ 3.14x10ˉ⁴ P = 1.5840 N/m² or bar

CONCLUSION & SCOPE

we have designed and built prototype model for washing the dishes
semiautomatically. The prototype of the dishwashing machine is built and tested
in laboratory for three sections which gives satisfactory results. This saves lot of
time and man power. Improved water efficiency also means less detergent can
be used which indirectly saves money. Our system is eco-friendly. And no
experts are required to operate the machine. In future time will be most
important, and our project will put good step towards it. It can be use in the
small organization where number of utensils will be bit less but time also need
to give less.
