Tutor Instructions

Ways to extend a lesson:

1. Have students write out their answers to discussion questions first (allow 2-3 minutes).
2. Have students share out their responses, each student taking a turn.
3. Share your own experiences as it relates to the lesson content or career information.
4. Build relationships in between lesson parts. Talk about favorite books, music, shows, video
games, movies.
5. Look up new or confusing words together online. Have students use these words in
sentences they write.
6. Have students explain the vocabulary words or key concepts in their own words. Again,
have them write it out first and then share.
7. Use the tab feature and share an appropriate YouTube video on the highlighted career or
lesson.
8. If you’re not familiar with Spanish, use Google translate to connect with your language
learners. They’ll love to hear you try to speak Spanish.
9. Take brain breaks and play a short game (approx. 5 minutes) related to the subject matter.
10. Engage your students in conversation about their school, their lives, their jobs, their family,
their friends. Some students need just some direct questions about things they enjoy to get
them talking.

Times on slides are approximations. You might need to spend less
or more time, depending on your students and session times.

If you have a shorter session (25-40 minutes), you can alter the
lesson to fit your time needs with your students. Suggestions
include:

1. Go through one “I Do” practice question instead of two.

2. Go through one “We Do” practice question instead of all three.
3. Keep discussion questions to 1-2 minutes.

Career Focus:
Machine Learning
Machine learning engineers make, on
average, $133,000 per year! If you
are interested in data, algorithms,
and artificial intelligence, this might
be the career for you.

You would need an engineering

degree (most likely a master's
degree) from a university.

Think of the ads you see on different

aps. They create an algorithm to
show you ads you would be
interested in.
Pythagorean Theorem
The Pythagorean Theorem describes the relationships
between the sides of a right triangle. The square of
the hypotenuse, the side opposite the right angle, is
equal to the sum of the squares of the two sides.
Pythagorean Theorem
To find the length of the hypotenuse, you will solve for
c.
Formula
Solving Variable Equations
In this example, we can
see that in order to isolate
X, we need to subtract 3
from both sides of our
equation.

It is important to re-write
each step of the equation
so that we can be sure to
simplify correctly!
Example
Now, let's get to our
practice problems.
But first, do you have any questions
before we get started?
I Do
Find, to the nearest 0.1 cm, the length of the hypotenuse of
a right triangle whose legs are 7 cm and 9 cm.

1) Draw a triangle and label it

2) Write the formula to find the hypothenuse
1) a2+b2=c2 = 72+92=c2
3) Solve, c = 11.4
I Do
A right triangle has legs of the same length and a
hypothenuse 16 cm long. Find the length of a leg to the
nearest 0.1 cm.

1) Draw a triangle and label it

2) Write the formula to find the hypothenuse
1) a2+b2= c2 = 162
3) Solve, a2 = 11.3

Solving an Equation in One-Variable
Created By: James Swadener

Example of Solving an Equation in One-Variable:

Step 1: Identify where the equal sign is located
(Draw a dotted vertical line through the equal sign)

Step 2: Simplify the left side of the equation

3(x + 4) − 8 = −2(3x − 9) + 4x
(Use order of operations and properties to simplify)
3x+12-8 = -6x+18+4x
=
Common Simplifying Steps:
• Distributive Property
3x+4 -2x+18
• Order of Operations (CLT)

Step 3: Simplify the right side of the equations

3x+4 -2x+18
(Use order of operations and properties to simplify)

-3x -3x
Step 4: Identify like terms on Both Sides of the equal sign
+4 = -5x+18
Step 5: Move term types to their own side of the equal sign
(Use inverse operations to balance the equations) - CREATE ZERO -18 -18
Step 6: Isolate the Variable
(Use inverse operations to make the coefficient 1) - CREATE ONE
-14 = -5x
Note: If coefficient is a fraction, then use both -5 -5
multiplication and division or multiply by the reciprocal.
14/ 5 = x
