CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCTION

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, one of the requirements in today's educational

system is "online distance learning ". It is a tremendous benefits for students and

teachers to be able to study and teach even during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to

gadgets and technology.

Online distance learning was implemented by the government on August

24 2020 it was implemented so that students do not stop their studies even if they

cannot go school. Online distance learning is a type of education system where there is

no need for students to go to schoolthey can simply study at home. When online

distance learning started it was very difficult to adjust to this kind of learning

especially those students that do not immediately understand what their teacher is

teaching and to those students that do not have Internet connection teachers also

having difficulties because sometimes they lose their Internet connection and because

of that sometimes teachers are not able to teach their students properly Sometimes

teachers lose the answers of their students on the activity that they gave the students to

answer.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has rattled the

world's educational system, but it has also given opportunities and challenges to

institutions of higher learning. Meanwhile, faculty corners about online education be

attributed to the fact that the majority had an unstable internet connection, with only a

few in this study having every reliable connection. Internet connectivity remains a

problem even among faculty members which has been an issue in the country since

the outbreak began schooling become a pressing requirement. To facilitate online

education, it is suggested that faculty be provided with better resources and technology

infrastructure.

The purpose of this research is so that the higher ups on the school would

know about the situation of the faculty members on online distance learning. Because

some of the teachers are having difficulties that is making it hard for them to teach

their students. For example slow internet connection it causes some of the students to

not attend their online classes because the Internet is to slow that they cannot even

connect with their teacher.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to know the Perception of the Faculty Members of Leon Guinto

Memorial College Inc.on Online Distance Learning.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of,

1.3 No. of years teaching

2. What is the perception of the faculty members of Leon Guinto Memorial College

in terms of.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The useful and relevant information that will be obtained from the study will be

profitable particularly to Teachers, Students, Parents and Future Researchers

Teacher - This research will be beneficial to every teacher in a way that they will

have knowledge towards the students point of view on what they experience in online

distance learning and how it effects on their academic lives in general therefore the

students that missed a lot of activities and lessons may have a opportunity to retake

those lessons and activities that they missed.

School Administrators - This study will serve as a basis for the school institution

to measure and consider the effects of online distances learning to the teachers and

academic performance of the students in Leon Guinto Memorial College, Inc. It will

also give the idea and time to build support for students and teachers on online

learning.

Future Researcher - This study will serve as a basis for the future researcher who

will possibly conduct a research like this. It will be beneficial in a way that it would

not be difficult for them to conduct this type of study with the reason that they already

have an existing knowledge that will be their building blocks for their own research

This research is limited only to faculty members of Leon Guinto Memorial

College, Inc. during the school year 2020 to 2021. In this study the researchers will

use purposive or judgmental sampling in the survey process because the researcher

needs a specific characteristic that the respondents must possess.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For reader’s better understanding, researcher operationally defined the following:

Connectivity - In general terms, connectivity is the ability to connect systems or

application programs. Ideally, these connections are established without requiring

many changes to the applications or the systems on which they run.

Faculty members - Means any person hired by the college or District to conduct

classroom or teaching activities or who is otherwise considered by the college to be a

member of faculty. ... Faculty member means any person hired by the College to

conduct classroom and/or research activities.

Lesson Delivery - Is all about holding true to the objectives of the lesson and

engaging the students in the appropriate pacing of the lesson based on student needs.

Online distance learning - Distance learning is an educational process where

students receive instruction through online classes, video recordings, video

conferencing, or any other audio/visual technology medium. It enables people to

receive education without having to be physically present in a classroom.

Student output - Is the product of learning or, in other words, the demonstration

that learning has occurred. Student output is extremely important in learning because it

helps to show that students are able to take the knowledge that they have learned.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains the reviews of related literature and studies which the

researchers have acquired in order to shed life on the study being conducted.

EDUCATION SYSTEM UNDER THE NEW NORMAL

The Department of Education (DepEd) has recently announced that it will have

the opening of classes physically on 24 August 2020 for the new school year (CNN

Philippines 2020). DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones must have based her declaration on

Republic Act No. 7977(Official Gazette 2020). Section 3 of this law which was passed in

1994 states that a “school year shall start on the first Monday of June but not later than

the last day of August “. She said that she has already forwarded this recommendation to

the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) (Rappler 2020)

The traditional instructor accepts the responsibility for what and how students

learn. To achieve the goal of teaching students how to learn, instructors should become

facilitators of learning (Cristano, 1993). “Knowing how to learn is the most basic of all

skills because it is the key that unlocks future success. Individuals who know how to

learn can more easily acquire other skills. Without this essential skill however, one’s

learning is not as rapid or as comprehensive and long lasting” (Carnevale, Gainer, &

Meltzer, 1990, p. 37).

ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING

Educators have traditionally expressed skepticism about the prospects of

reproducing outcomes equivalent to traditional face-to-face instruction by means of

online distance learning, according to Paul VanPortfliet and Anderson (2013). In a study

comparing outcomes from online and hybrid course, VanPortfliet and Anderson note

that it is believed that academic achievement and retention are worse for students

following distance learning programs than for those being taught in traditional

classroom settings. An explanation cites for this relative lack of efficacy traces it back

to a lack of contact between students, their teacher and their peers in the learning

environment.

Figure 1 shows the discussion of the perception of the faculty members of Leon

Guinto Memorial College Inc. on online distance learning, school year 2020 to 2021,

where all faculty members in the said school are the source of information. The Input

shows the perception of the faculty members on Leon Guinto Memorial College, Inc.

on online distance learning, while the process consists of the profiling, survey, and

data analysis of the study, lastly, the output shows determine perception of the faculty

members of Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc. on online distance learning.

Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods utilized by the researchers in conducting the

study. This includes the research design, research locale, population, research

instruments, data gathering procedure and treatment of data.

Locale of the Study

The locale of the study will be Leon Guinto Memorial College, Inc. where

faculty members during school year 2020 to 2021 participating on online distance

learning will be involved.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers will use descriptive type of research since it aims

to describe the relationship between academic performance and e-learning in Leon

Guinto Memorial College, Inc.

Respondents

The target population consists of 16 female teachers and 6 male teachers with a

total of 22 teachers at Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc. The researcher will use a

purposive sampling approach in identifying the student dancers that will be the

respondents in this study.

Research Instrument

The researcher will use a questionnaire as an instrument in conducting the

study in which this questionnaire contains questions that will serve as data for

analyzing the effect of being part of a faculty members. The instrument will aim to

gather information about the respondents in terms of their age, sex and No. of years

teaching. The research questionnaire will be self-made by the researcher wherein the

respondents will put a check on the column of their choice, after gathering necessary

data the result will be tabulated using weighted mean and percentage.

Data Gathering and Procedure

Due to the pandemic the researchers will make a Google form that contains

their questions and deploy it to their target respondents through messenger. The data

that the researchers need are from a total of 22 teachers at Leon Guinto Memorial

College Inc. The survey questionnaire will be collected afterwards. After the

collection of data, analysis of the responses will be done in order to process the

information obtain from the student dancers.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers used the percentage and weighted mean in determining the

frequency of effects of being part of a dance troupe.

1. Percentage

A Percentage describes how many parts there are out of one hundred parts of a

particular thing. This will be used in the profile of teachers to determine their

perceived effects of being part of a faculty members.
