The teacher will play a video about visualizing

volume.
SOURCE: Volume - Rectangular Prisms - YouTube

After the video presented, the teacher will

demonstrate the volume using the box. Introduce
the formula in finding the volume.

Look at the figure below. This is a rectangular

prism which is made up of unit cubes, Can you find
the volume of this figure?

Volume is measured according to the length, width

and height of the figure. So, the formula in finding

the volume of a rectangular prism is: V = l x w x h

Where: l is the length, w is the width, h is the
height.
Study the solid figure below. This is a cube.

Since a cube has l

= w = h = s (side), therefore V = s³ or s x s x s or
V = e³ or e x e x e where e is the length of an
edge of the cube. So, the volume of the above
cube is 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 cubic units.

The cubic units we use most often for volume are

cubic centimeter (cm³), cubic decimeter (dm³),
cubic meter (m³) milliliter (ml), and liter (L).

These are related as follows: 1 000 cm³ = 1 dm³ 1

000 dm³ = 1 m3 1 000 000 cm3 = 1 m3 1 dm³ =
1 L 1 000 cm³ = 1 L 1 000 L = 1 m³ 1 cm³ = 1 ml

To convert the cubic unit of measure to its larger

equivalence, use division and to convert the bigger
unit to its smaller equivalence use multiplication.

F. Generalization
Remember: Volume is the amount of space
occupied by a solid figure. It is the number of cubic
units needed to fill in the container. Volume is
three-dimensional which is composed of the Area
of the Base (length x width) times the height. That
is why it is always expressed in cubic units such as
cubic centimeter (cm3), cubic decimeter (dm3),
cubic meter (m3), cubic inches (in3), cubic feet
(ft3), etc. The formula for finding the Volume of a
Cube is V = s x s x s or s3 or e x e x e or e3 while
the formula for finding the Volume of a
Rectangular Prism is V= l x w x h.
