SPREADSHEET OF R.C. FOOTINGS FOR R.C. COLUMNS SUBJECTED TO VERTICAL LOAD

& MOMENTS BY WORKING STRESS METHOD AS PER IS:456-2000
NOTES FOR USERS:
Checks adequacy of the Footings of given size, with Concrete Grade, 1. Figures and Texts in white cells only are to be filled as inputs. U
10 no. footings can be designed. For any footing nor requiring d
Reinforcement and SBC of soil, for the applied loads. all inputs for that footing are to be left blank by using 'Delete' k
2. Concrete grade can be any grade as per IS:456-2000.
3. Yield strength of steel, fy = 415 N/mm 2 or 500 N/mm2 for HYSD
Concrete Grade = M 253 = 240 N/mm2 or 250 N/mm2 for M
4. For footings subjected to uni-axial moment (Mx or My only), case
Yield Strength of Steel, fy (N/mm2) = 415 3 -ve soil pressure (tension) is also considered. But any footing
10.98 (8.24) subjected to bi-axial moments (both Mx and My), case of -ve soi
Modular Ratio DL+LL case (Wind/Seismic in bracket), m = pressure is not considered, in which case the footing size is to b
SBC of soil (Gross) at depth H below G.L.under DL + LL = 200 kN/m 2 revised till all the soil pressures under the footing are positive.
5. For footings subjected to loads including wind or seismic case,
-Do- above under DL + LL + Wind/Seismic = 250 kN/m 2
permissible stresses in concrete and steel are enhanced by 33 1/3%
as per the code.
Density of dry soil, γsoil = 18 kN/m3 6. Wherever the results are shown in red, revise the footing size or
reinforcement as necessary.
Density of wet soil, if any (Approx.=0.6* γsoil + 10) 20.8 kN/m3 7. Factor of safety against over-turning is based on 0.9x(self.wt of
footing + soil wt. over foundation) + full load from column.
8. For notes on input preparation, refer to worksheet on 'Notes'.

NOTES ON FOOTINGS .xls

This Spreadsheet is intended to be used by qualified Civil and Structural Engineers who are
familiar with the provisions of IS:456-2000, and those who will evaluate the significance and
limitations of its contents and take responsibility for its use and application.

DISCLAIMER

No liability is accepted by the author of the Spreadsheets for any direct, indirect, consequential or
incidental loss or damage arising out of the usage of Spreadsheets or any mistakes and negligence
in developing the Spreadsheets. The organisation or person using the Spreadsheets bears all risks
and responsibility for the quality and performance of the Spreadsheets.

Notes for Input:

1. The spreadsheet is for the design of R.C. Footings for R.C. Columns subjected to
vertical load and moments by working stress method as per IS:456-2000.
2. For footings subjected to uni-axial moment (Mx or My only), case of -ve soil pressure (tension)
is also considered. But for any footing subjected to bi-axial moments (both Mx and My), case of
-ve soil pressure is not considered, in which case the footing size is to be revised till all the
soil pressures under the footing are positive.
3. For footings subjected to loads including wind or seismic case, permissible stresses in concrete
and steel are enhanced by 33 1/3 % as per the code.
4. The user should ensure that the design satisfies the codal requirements on maximum spacing
of bars, cover to reinforcement, etc.
5. Cover to bars considered is clear to outermost layer of bars.
6. Wherever the results are shown in red, revise the footing size or reinforcement as necessary.
7. Factor of safety against over-turning is based on 0.9x(self.wt of footing + soil wt. over foundation)
+ full load from column.
8. Calculations can be made for 10 (ten) number footings. For any footing that is not to be designed,
all inputs for that footing shall be left blank by using 'Delete' key.
