Let’s review SIMPLE TENSES! Fill in the blanks in the rules and come up with examples:
What’s the difference between simple and continuous tenses? How do you choose between them? Do
markers always definitely tell us which tense to use?
Go through the chart and add your own examples for each of the rules.
Choose the best option, A or B. If both options are possible, choose both.
Do you remember what state verbs are? Think of some examples. Here’s what you need to know:
Can you see the difference in meaning?
When we use the continuous aspect, we view the action in progress. It does not describe the whole event.
The continuous aspect may indicate:
• that the action (or series of actions) is in progress, we view it at some point between its beginning and its
end;
• that the action is not complete;
• that the situation is only temporary.
State verbs don’t have this meaning, they state facts, and that’s why we don’t use the continuous aspect with
them.
Choose the best option, A or B. If both options are possible, choose both.
