Objectives :

1
The load characteristics of a synchronous motor show the stator current I1m , the excitation
current Ie . The motor input power P1m, the torque developed by the motor Te and the efficiency
η as a function of the output power 𝑃 of the motor.

Equipment and Components Used:

1. Three phase supply.

2. Wires.

3. Board to connect devices.

4. Three phase synchronous motor.

5. Shunt generator.

6. Two Dynamic field rheostat.

7. Shunt field.

8. Autotransformer.

9. Two wattmeters.

10.Three Amatters.

11.Three Voltmeters.

12. Switches.

13.Load Resistance.

Procedure:

1. Connect the circuit as shown in fig.1

2. Start the synchronous motor. Keeping the p.f. constant and equal to unity (both the watt meters
readings will be equal) vary the load on the generator in steps up to the rated current of the
motor. Take the readings of meters and measure the value of δ for each step of loading.

3. Repeat 2 above for 0.866 p.f. lagging condition (in this case one wattmeter reading will be
double the other wattmeter reading).

4. Repeat 2 above for 0.5 p.f. lagging condition (in this case one wattmeter reads zero).

Calculation and graph:

2
1. Tabulate the results as in table (1). For u.p.f load conditions on the motor and calculate δ.

Ans:

For U.P.F
