Problem Set 3

1. Find the equation of a circle whose center is at (2, -4) and radius 3.

(x+2)2 + (y-4)2 = r2
r=3

(x+2) (x+2)=9
x2+2x+2x+4 = 9
x2+4x+4 -9 = 0
X2+4x-5=0

(y-4) (y-4)=9
y2-4y-4y+16 = 9
y2-8y+16-9 = 0
y2-8y+7=0

2. Find the center and the radius of th circle with equation x 2 -2x+y2-8y+1=0

X2+y2-2x-8y+=1
X2-2x+y2-8y=1
x2-2x-(1)2+y2-8y-(4)2=1
(x-1)2+(y-4)2=1-1+16
(x+(1))2+(y+(4))2=16
(x+(1))2+(y+(4))2=42

(h,k) = (1,4)

3. Find the equation of a circle whose center is at the point (-2,3) and its diameter has a length of 10

(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2

(x - (-2))2 + (y - 3)2 = r2

(x + 2)2 + (y - 3)2 = r2

d = 10, r = 5, r2 = 25

(x + 2)2+ (y - 3)2= 25

4. Find an equation of the circle whose center is at the point (-4, 6) and passes through the point (1,
2).

(x-4)2 + (y-6)2=r2
Where x is equal to 1 and y is equal to 2.
(1-4)2 + (2-6)2=r2
(-3)2 + (-4)2 =r2
9+16=r2
25=r2
r=25/2
r=5

5. Find an equation of the circle whose diameter has endpoint at (-5, 2) and (3, 6).

M=(X1+X2/2, Y1 + Y2)/2)
=(-5+3/2, 3+6/2)
=(-2/2, 9/2)
= (1, 4.5)

(x-1)2 + (y-4.5)2=r2
=(3-1)2 + (6-4.5)2 =r2
= 4 + 2.25
r2 = 6.25
