ABSTRACT

Face to face learning engagement of students and teachers within the school has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has
paved the way to the implementation of Modular Distance Learning as an urgent response to ensure continuity of education. The Philippines is in the
process of adapting to the new normal form of education at present, and continuous innovations of educators and active involvement of other
stakeholders are the driving force for its success. The key purpose of this research is to find out the challenges encountered, opinions, and
recommendations of teachers, parents, and students in the implementation of Modular Distance Learning in Speaker Eugenio Perez National
Agricultural School (SEPNAS) during the School Year 2020-2021. The main challenges that emerged werelack of school funding in the production
and delivery of modules; students struggle with self-studying, and parents' lack of knowledge to academically guide their child/children.

CHAPTER 1

Background of the study

During 2020, the pandemic came and brought changes in many perspectives of our lives including our
education and academic life. While the COVID-19pandemic sent educational institutions scrambling to
move classes online, many forget that there are other modes for distance learning. Online learning is not the
only type of distance learning. However, the most popular mode of distance learning under consideration is
modular learning. To make sure that learning remains unhampered, DepEd implemented a distance learning
approach, a learning delivery mode where interaction takes place between the teacher and the students who
are geographically remote from each other during instruction.

A module is a set of learning opportunities organized around a well -defined topic which contains the
elements of ordinate dictation, categorical objectives, edifying cognition activities, and evaluation utilizing
criterion -referenced measures UNESCO (1988) A module covers either a single element of subject matter
content or a group of content elements composing a discrete unit of subject matter or area of adeptness. A
module has placidly defined objectives; preferably in behavioural form (Daries, 1981).Varieties of teaching
methods that will fixate on cumulating methods that can best realize the creative and constructive
engagement with learning activities that leads to understanding Ramsden (1992).

Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to determine the Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning of Grade 11 HUMSS Students. Specifically, this study sought to
answers to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of Senior High School Learners of SPEAKER EUGENIO PEREZ NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL in terms of age,
sex, parents’ educational background and parents’ occupation?

2. What is the level of the Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning of Grade 11 HUMSS Students?

3. Are there significant differences in the level of Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning Modality of the respondents when grouped according to age, sex,
parents’ educational background and parents’ occupation?

4. Are there significant differences in the English Performance of the respondents when grouped according to age, sex, parents ’educational background and
parents’ occupation?

5. In what way of learning are the students learn more and effectively?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE

STUDY
The study covers the comparative on the learning modalities of the grade 11-HUMSS students and its
effects on their learning strategies. The main cause of the change of the learning styles of the students,
which is the pandemic, is excluded from this study. The period of the study started from February-April for
the reason that it is the time when schoolyear is almost over and it will be easier for the students to give
answers about the comparison of Online Distance Learning and Modular Distance Learning based on their
experiences. The researchers will get accurate responses because of the specific timeline.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Learning in the new normal is made challenging by the fact that facilitation of learning is through self-learning
printed modules in public basic education schools in the Philippines.

Students – The goal of this study project is to help HUMSS students to notice their supplication, give attention to have a fast solution on current situation, implement the

importance and develop skills in preparation for post Senior High School Curriculum.

Parents – This research will provide impetus for them to initiate a deeper discussion with other stakeholders like their peer parents, teachers, and school leaders.

School Administrators –The school authorities can gain insights that will results in an immediate action regarding the availability of tools and Equipment.

Teachers – The teacher will be more efficiently aware of the capacity of their learners.

Future Researchers – This will add to current pool of knowledge in learning the so called “new normal “as the world shifts educational systems of delivering teaching

and learning does that not requires having to go to the school. Information from studies such as these will help broaden understanding on how education delivery can be more
effectively delivered and improved.

Other Consumer of Research – The researchers aim to conduct this study so that the outcome of the research will give impetus to the public about how learning in the
new normal takes place. This is hoped to inspire public opinion that will capture the attention of concerned government agencies for them to ensure that HUMSS students
effective to learn.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
MODULAR- employing or involving a module or modules as the basis of design or construction.

LEARNING- the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.

DISTANCE- an amount of space between two things or people.

TEACHERS- a person who teaches, especially in a school.

EDUCATION- the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.

ONLINE- controlled by or connected to another computer or to a network.

INSTRUCTOR- a person who teaches something.

ASSESSMENT- the evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something.

COMPARATIVE- involving comparison between two or more branches of science or subjects of study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

In large conducting a survey, this study used a large sample size for it to target the 50 students that represent
the whole population of the Senior High School students of Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural
School. This study limits its coverage of the Senior High School HUMSS students only. The survey
questionnaire and rating scale prepared must be designated during the free and vacant time of the
respondents.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
Effectiveness of modular distance learning of grade 11 Humss student: why modular learning is effective? A
module structure is especially important in online learning environments, as it provides an aid in the
presentation and application of the online teaching and learning process. When students are aware of the
structure of the course, they spend less time guessing about what is expected of them and more time
focusing on the content and activities. Benefit of distance education is its flexibility. Students can choose
when, where, and how they learn by selecting the time, place, and medium for their education.

CHAPTER 2
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Following the related studies presented, the research designed a conceptual framework that relates to the
studies. The conceptual framework consists four major variables which are the modular distance learning,
parent’s guidance, student’s performance and the teacher’s way of teaching. The modular distance learning
of the students is the independent variables that affect the student’s performance, parent’s guidance and the
teacher’s way of teaching in the Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School of Senior High School
of HUMSS students. The modular distance learning as the independent variable was affected by the three
dependent variables.

HYPOTHESIS

As indicated by the findings, a.) There is no significant

correlation relationship between the socio-demographic
profiles of the students to the way of their learning, b.)
There is rather strong relationship between distance or face-
to-face learning, and the student’s performance, parent’s
guidance and the teacher’s way of teaching to the students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

AND STUDIES

Modular learning is the most popular type of Distance Learning. In the Philippines, this learning modality is
currently used by all public schools because according to a survey conducted by the Department of
Education (DepEd), learning through printed and digital modules emerged as the most preferred distance
learning method of parents with children who are enrolled this academic year (Bernardo, J). This is also in
consideration of the learners in rural areas where internet is not accessible for online learning. The teacher
takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners. The learners may ask assistance from the
teacher via e-mail, telephone, text message/instant messaging among others. Where possible, the teacher
shall do home visits to learners needing remediation or assistance (Llego, n.d.). Printed Modules will be
delivered to students, parents or guardians by the teachers or through the Local Government Officials.
Education is no longer held within the school, parents serve as partners of teachers in education. Parents
play a vital role as home facilitators. Their primary role in modular learning is to establish a connection and
guide the child. (FlipScience, 2020).

andpublication took time. In 2020, we started collecting data and till 2021 the data collection
continued. Before data collection, there was period of few months during which we procedure
kits and contacted some participants and persons needed in the study.

The study was conducted in Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School which located
at Roxas Blvd. San Carlos City, Pangasinan. This place was selected for knowing the efficiency
of the said study among HUMSS senior high school student.

Population and Participants

A ‘sample’ is a subset of the population, selected so as to be representative of the larger population. Since
we cannot study the entire population we need to take a sample. Sampling techniques are broadly classified
into ‘probability’ and ‘non-probability’ samples. Probability sampling allows the investigator to generalise
the findings of the sample to the target population

The gathered data that used in this study was from the Grade 11 to Grade 12 students from senior high
school department of Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School (SEPNAS).
