Semester Topic Behavior of Liquids

3rd Semester
Lesson Time 35 minutes

Date:

1: General Objectives:

At the end of the lesson student will be able to:

1. Understand the behavior of liquids at high temperature.

2. Understand the behavior of liquids under high pressure.
2: Specific objectives:

At the end of the lesson student will be able to:

1. Define boiling point.

2. Explain the process of boiling.
3. Define atmospheric pressure.
4. Understand the factors affecting boiling point.
5. Find out the boiling point experimentally.
3:Teaching method: : Lecture, Demonstration

4: Teaching Aids: White board, chart, Practical apparatus

5: Previous knowledge:

1. What happens when you heat a liquid?

2. What is the temperature at which liquids turn into gas?
3. How much time water take to oil if it is covered?
6: Announcing the topic: BOILING POINT

7: Learning activity/ Demonstration:

Introduction:
Start the lesson with the definition of boiling point. Write the definition at the white
board. Explain the process of boiling in detail. Explain the terms vapour pressure and
atmospheric pressure. Give examples of ethyl alcohol, diethyl ether and water and draw
boiling point curves at the white board. Ask students to define boiling point, vapour pressure
and atmospheric pressure. Give one minute to students to recall the lesson.

Discuss the factors affecting the boiling point. Write them at the white board. Ask
different questions to assess the learning. Give one minute to recall the lesson.

Demonstration:

Required apparatus for the experiment includes beakers, tripod stand, burner, match
stick, thermometer, wire gauze. Take water in a small beaker and heat. Note the temperature
at which it boils. Note the atmospheric pressure in the barometer.

8:Formative evaluation:

Students will answer the given question.

1. Define boiling point?

2. Define atmospheric pressure?
3. Define vapour pressure?
4. Name the factors affecting the boiling point.

8: Conclusion: Tell the students what they have learned with the help of following
questions by providing their answers to them.

1. What is boiling point?

2. What is relationship of boiling point with pressure?
3. What are the factors affecting boiling point?
9: Summative evaluation questions:

1. Define boiling point?

2. Define atmospheric pressure?
3. What is effect of intermolecular forces on boiling point?
4. How will you measure boiling point of a liquid?
10: Reinforcements/ Home work:

1. Define boiling point and write different factors affecting boiling point?
