REST
This may mean staying off the
injured limb entirely or just
avoiding exercise and certain
activities as needed.
ICE
Apply ice to the injury during the
first 48 hours to lessen swelling
and relieve pain. Ice for no more
than 20 minutes at a time, every
two hours, four to eight times a
day.
COMPRESSION
Wrap the injury with an elastic
bandage to provide support.
Rewrap the bandage every fours
to maintain compression and
minimize swelling. The bandage
should be firm but not too tight.
If after 10 minutes, the area
below the injury s red or swollen,
loosen the bandage.
ELEVATION
As much as possible, keep the
injured area elevated above the
level of the heart. Gravity will
drain the fluid away from the
injury. Elevating the injured area
even a little will help with
swelling.
