Abstract

Title: Comparison on the Effectiveness of Modular Learning in General Mathematics

among the Senior High School Strands

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of modular learning among senior high school strands and
investigate the influence of students’ demographic profiles on their academic performances. Using One Way
ANOVA, results showed a significant difference in the test scores obtained from the different strands. Results
with Tukey HSD revealed that ABM performed best under modular learning, followed by STEM, GAS, ATS,
and EIM, respectively. Pearson’s r revealed a significant correlation between student’s sex, monthly income,
and parents’ employment status to students’ academic performance. Furthermore, the z test for two means
determined that there was a significant difference in the scores of males and females. From these results, the
researcher suggests that teachers handling TVL tracks must exert extra effort in delivering their mathematics
lessons to close the gap in academic performance with the students from academic tracks.

Abstract

Education in the new normal is a challenging task in the Philippines in an attempt to push through education
amidst the deadly pandemic caused by covid-19. The Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on
Higher Education (CHED) adopted and implemented the flexible model of blended learning despite many
oppositions because of the risk to open classes because of the virus. The different learning modalities are the
following: Modular (Printed), Modular (Digitized), Online, Educational TV, Radio-Based Instruction, Home
Schooling and Blended Learning. For the cities where modern living is adapted and students and learners have
the privilege of having internet connection at home, Online learning is implemented especially for the high
schools and colleges but for those living in rural areas or provinces where internet connection is only available
for only few, Modular Distance Learning is implemented. Modular Distance Learning is the use of Modules
made by teachers with different tasks and learning activities based from the essential learning competencies.

Abstract

Department of Education National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad Abstract. The key purpose of
this research was to find out the effectiveness of modular approach in teaching in order to assess the student
learning, performance and achievement and to determine whether the modular teaching is more effective than
traditional methods. The study was experimental type. Equivalent group study design was used. Population was
university students of Master in educational planning and management. Sample size was consisted of 30
students. The data were collected from both groups (controlled and experimental) analyzed and interpreted by
using mean, standard deviation and t-test through the use of statistical package SPSS. The result’ scores were in
the favor of usage of modular teaching approach. So it is recommended that the modular approach should be
widely used at various levels of education.

Abstract

Title: Effect of Modular Distance Learning Approach to Academic

Performance in Mathematics of Students in Mindanao State
University-Sulu Senior High School Amidst Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract
The existence of the COVID-19 pandemic brought extraordinary challenges to the stakeholders: teachers,
parents, and students. Thus, the researcher believed that there was an effect of the teaching-learning process in
new normal education on students’ performance, most especially when using a modular type of learning in
mathematics. With this, the study sought to determine the perception of the students regarding the modular
distance learning approach (MDLA) in Mathematics, identify the challenges of the students, examine the effect
of MDLA on the academic performance of students in Mathematics, determine the level of academic
performance of students, determine the significant difference in perceptions when they were grouped according
to their gender and age, and determine the relationship between the students’ perceptions regarding MDLA and
their academic performance in Mathematics. The descriptive research design was utilized in this study. The
researcher gathered one hundred seventy-eight (178) grade 11 STEM students currently enrolled in MSU-Sulu
Senior High School through the use of purposive random sampling. The survey questionnaire was applied in the
study. The mean, frequency counts and percentage, t-test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA), and person product-moment correlation were used to analyze and interpret the data. Based on the
results, the study revealed that students’ perceptions agreed on using a modular distance learning approach
(MDLA). It means the students had positive perceptions regarding MDLA in mathematics. The study also
revealed that students agreed on using the modular distance learning approach (MDLA) in math, although there
were a few challenges. There was also a positive effect on students’ performance in that they performed very
well in mathematics, which means they had good quality performance. However, the study also revealed that
there was no significant difference in their perceptions when they were grouped by gender and age, which
means the students had the same perceptions. Moreover, the findings revealed that there is no enough evidence
to conclude that there is a significant relationship between the students’ perceptions and the academic
performance of the STEM grade 11 students using the new method of teaching modular distance learning
approach (MDLA) amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the academic
performances of STEM students were not affected by their perceptions of MDLA. This means that the quality
of performance did not depend on their perceptions. And the researcher also concluded that this approach
helped students improve their math performance. Since it was proved that this approach improved the
mathematical understanding and helped the students have good performance, the researcher recommended that
MDLA must be continued in face-to-face instruction and highly recommended using modules. Teachers guide
those who need special attention and need to prepare an easy type of module in mathematics to understand well.
Any member of the family can help to guide and serve as a para-teacher. Training, workshops, and seminars
should be provided to the teachers to improve themselves and the academic performance of the students.

Title: Modular Distance Learning: Its Effect in the Academic Performance

of Learners in the New Normal

Abstract
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools, particularly in the rural areas, employed Modular Distance Learning
(MDL) to ensure education continuity. This study seeks to investigate the effects of MDL on the academic
performance of learners and whether there is a significant difference in their performance before and after the
implementation of MDL. A mixed methods approach was applied in this study; quantitative using T-Test to
compare the GWA of learners and qualitative through the use of semi-structured interviews to find out the
perceived effect of MDL on 15 parents, 10 learners, and 7 teachers and their recommendations. The study
revealed that the 2.25% decrease in the GWA of learners after the implementation of MDL indicates a
significant difference in their academic performance. MDL strengthens family bonding, promotes independent
learning, and is cost-effective. However, it is an additional workload for working parents. There is limited
teacher-learner interaction. Learners lack socialization with other children and have no exposure to significant
school activities but are exposed to many distractions at home. To bridge the gaps, the simplification of
modules accompanied by video lessons and audio recordings, the conduct of online mediations, neighborhood
instruction, and home visitations are recommended. The results of this study will help teachers reflect on their
current teaching strategies and improve learning outcomes. Future researchers who will conduct research related
to modular distance learning may also consider the findings of this study in drafting their related concepts.
