II. ANSWER QUESTIONS

1) In the experiment above, what is the effect of the concentration of Na 2S2O3 and
H2SO4 on the reaction rate? Write the reaction rate expression. Determine the order
of the reaction.
Answer:
-The concentration of Na2S2O3 is proportional to the reaction rate, the concentration
of H2SO4 has almost no effect on the reaction rate.
-Reaction rate expression:
Rate= k.[Na2S2O3]1,0845.[H2SO4]0,076
-The order of reaction= 1,0845 + 0,076 = 1,1605

2) Mechanism of the reaction can be written as:

H2SO4 + Na2S2O3 → Na2SO4 + H2S2O3 (1)
H2S2O3 → H2SO3 + S ↓ (2)
Based on the experiment results, may we conclude that the reaction (1) or (2) is the
rate-determining step, which is the slowest step of the reaction? Recall that in the
experiments, the amount of the acid H2SO4 is always used in excess.
Answer:
-(1) is an ion exchange reaction, so it happens very quickly.
-(2) is a redox reaction, so it happens very slow.
à(2) is the reaction that determine the reaction rate.

3) Based on the principle of the experimental method, the reaction rate is

considered as an instantaneous rate or average rate.
Answer:
-The average reaction rate is determined by , because rC ~0 ( change in the
concentration of sulfur is not significant over the time interval rt) the reaction rate is
considered as an instantaneous rate.

4) If the order of adding H2SO4 and Na2S2O3 is reserved, does the reaction order
chance? Explain your answer.
Answer:
If the order of adding H2SO4 and Na2S2O3 is reserved, the reaction order will not
change. This is because at a define temperature the order of reaction depends only
on the nature of the system (concentration, temperature, surface area, pressure), it
does not depend on reactant order.
