1. The Brownfields are the future of the E&P
The future of E&P is in re explore the mature or brown field. Before to develop and operate a greenfield
project, take time for re explore the mature fields is the best alternative or the logical solution for save
money, time, and paperwork’s.
This example below where I was involved in the operations of Re exploration, that’s the good example for
explain is the concept, “you need to re explore your brownfields before to pass to a green field”

In 2014 I participated to the first OBN seismic with Total in Gabon, I was working for Fairfield Nodal. We re-explore
the “la Torpille field”, an old field which was with 4500 bpd. Torpille was from 1970 the “offshore vitrine” of elf and
after Total.

After OBN studies they increase the production for sell to Perenco only with some modifications of the network of
production and at a very good price considering the very old age of the field
https://www.gabonreview.com/petrole-pour-195-milliards-de-fcfa-total-gabon-vend-des-champs-offshore-a-
perenco/

The increase of BPD? secret! after the seismic and the modification of the network of production (2016 in
yellow) they were happy at Total! And Perenco Also. But it’s a modification of the network of production.

• Now for Total Energies is the rule to reexplore the main fields in production for modify the network
of production. This strategy is clearly explained

• For Perenco, the brownfield is “the model of production”
https://www.perenco.com/fr/filiales/gabon

1.2 why this strategy is not so developed

There are various examples of adventurers of the Brown Fields:

• the precursor is Jean François Henin with Maurel and Prom in Gabon, which was sold to PERTAMINA

• Hubert Perrodo with Perenco: The Group began operations in the oil and gas industry in Singapore in
1975 as a maritime services company and is now a major player. The African brownfield is “the specialty”
of PERENCO

• The Bush family with Carlyle International Energy Partner (CIEP) is continually seeking investment
opportunities in oil and gas outside of North America, including Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. The
investments are mainly focused on oil and gas exploration and production, medium and downstream
activities, refining and marketing (R & M) and oilfield services (FSO)

The interesting is that’s those 3 examples are involved in Gabonese operations and with Assala Energy the
confirmation that all the companies have understood that the main problem, the quality of the exploration
in the year 70’ especially in Gabon. They decided to go on this way only with the intuition.

1.3. Philosophy of the re exploration of the brownfield (mature field) by RSS-NMR

Without to spend a huge money, a lot of time and human resource in of one of the possible green field
projects, you can finance a refurbish study with a re-exploration of the deposits in production (Brown
Fields) without having to stop the production. For that you will use the RSS-NMR for redraft the full
reservoir and the full field

After to have the results of the RSS-NMR re-exploration, the technical departments of field management in
production can redo a new production plan by modifying the network of production with others
equipment’s (engineering and construction, like Total in Gabon) and the operating mode of the field for
the new form of production (reservoir management more elaborated)

- To be able to do the re-development of the old Brown field permits to each E & P entity to have the tool
for increase the number of barrels and have acceptable critical BPD number for sustain the activities and
take strategical decisions in this mature field.

- Make an observation of new possible blocks processing a "quick review" of the block without
authorization to see if the company can participate in a bidding. This permits also to do a selection of the
best and most promising blocks, and also from this point determine a limit of the purchase value and a
budget accordingly for a reasonable development considering that a green field its 8/ years from the start
to the first barrel

- In case of association acquisition or merging with another E & P, you can verify the assets (BPD) and the
reserves to exploit before to finalize the deal

2. Evolution of the technology in exploration

2.1 historically
It’s an introduction to the exploration technologies

• Past and start of the seismic

Seismic reflection began to be developed to locate deposits starting in the 1930s. Dynamite was then used
to create acoustic shocks. Designed since the 1960s, 2D images and since 1985 3D now accompany seismic
prospecting campaigns as soon as the probability of finding a deposit is sufficient to justify their use.

Since the 2000s, self-contained bits have been used to orient oblique drilling toward the horizontal. This
gives access to hydrocarbon formations that are not very thick, but that extend for several kilometers.
Then we discovered that oil fields often communicate with each other over considerable distances, for
example in the North Sea. The tool was missing to be able to give a macro view of these deposits that at
first glance seem independent, but in reality, are connected in networks.

• Present
Prospecting/exploration will play a decisive role in the global energy future, which today is uncertain due
to the lack of a clear vision of the real reserves available and the extraction of hydrocarbons from bedrock
at economically viable prices. Current technological development should not only help reduce costs, but
above all, be friendly to the environment and local people.

Thanks to RSS/NMR technology (“RSS-NMR SEVSU-Poisk” © Copyright SEVSU-Poisk Group), we are able to
carry out an agile and complete study of the oil field by remote studies, that is, without human presence
on the ground.

2.4 Quality of the result with the differents methodogies of acquisitions

Technically the quality of the first 2D seismic done in the years 60’ /70’ was of very bad quality to
mediocre. In a conference of 2005 at IFP specialists explain clearly with two slides that seismic of the
years 60-70 are archaic but its was the sole tool to be available for pursue an exploration and develop a
production.

The interesting point is that this technology 2D was used in green field in the 60’ is covering mainly or
brown fields or abandoned & sealed field. After exploration done using 2D like explain the IFP since 2005 in
a conference done in Paris (available in French only) the results are not reliable.

In conclusions a lot of fields has been explored but not completely because the technology was not
adequate, now with la 3D they arrive to have a better idea of the reservoir. This technology is expensive
and take time.

3.RSS-NMR technical explications

3.1. comparative

3.1.1."What is the difference between the existing remote methods in various companies and our
remote method (Stage1 Diagnostics)"?

For comparison, let's take the seismic technology used by all oil exploration companies. Seismic machines
generate a high-powered signal that is directed underground. Firstly, this powerful signal does not carry
any information, and secondly, it dissipates in all directions and therefore must be very powerful in order
to reach the deep. When it reaches the boundary of the two media underground, it is reflected and picked
up by receivers on the surface. (Faceless signal does not penetrate inside the substance, it is an anomaly).
And then a long interpretation of the data is necessary. We talked to many interpreters who have different
opinions about the same object. That is, some kind of anomaly is revealed. Which may be a deposit or not.
Only drilling can confirm the presence of the deposit. Statistics say that only 3 or 4 wells hit the target. The
efficiency of seismic is not higher than 30-35%. The main property of seismic is reflection.

3.1.2. How RSS-NMR technology works?

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is the phenomenon where nuclei in a static magnetic field are
perturbed by weak oscillating magnetic field; they respond by producing electromagnetic signal in a
frequency particular of the magnetic field of their nucleus. A key feature of NMR is that the resonance
frequency of a particular simple substance is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic
field. It is this feature that is exploited in imaging techniques; if a sample is placed in a magnetic field then
the resonance frequencies of the sample ‘s nuclei depend on where in the field they are located. Radio-
frequency magnetic fields penetrate both soft and hard rock allowing higher resolution anomalies
mapping and can easily be used with a boat, plane, helicopter or truck for exploration.

3.2. Various stages

3.2.1. Stage 1
Special processing and interpretation of analog satellite images. The stage includes the following:
1. Processing of image material with ingenious nanogels and solutions to amplify and highlight
spectral anomalies associated with petroleum accumulations/ ore deposits
2. Enhanced processing of the image in a small-scale nuclear reactor,
3. Plotting of preliminary boundaries of hydrocarbon accumulation / ore deposits on the area-of-
interest map.

3.2.2. Stage 2
The resonant frequencies of the reference molecule ‘s atoms are imposed/modulated on the carrier
frequency by a high-frequency generator. High-frequency electromagnetic fields, characteristic of the
reference sample ‘s elements, are induced above the sample ‘s accumulation by its resonating frequencies.
Each characteristic electromagnetic field is sequentially recorded by a sensitive receiving device tuned to
register resonant frequencies of the reference sample ‘s atoms, ensuring a plausible identification of
petroleum accumulations / ore deposits

3.2.3 Stage 3
Compilation of results and redaction of report

3.3. Benefits of the NMR approach

• Substantial increase of chance of success,

• Reducing risks and uncertainties,
• Highly cost efficient,
• Zero in just on the area of exploration acreages, for prospect delineation and drilling/trenching, with
targeted seismic, if needed

By ingenious remote sensing expertise plus corroborating field works derived from the Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance (NMR) theory, commercially relevant anomalies are identified, delineated and geologically
substantiated. Beneficial pre-knowledge on economic feasibility of acreage is provided; further,
recommendation on best area for targeted seismic (if so pursued) or drilling.
The application of three integrated disciplines of patented remote sensing acumen, scientifically vindicated
NMR field works and the ultimate G & G authentication of the findings, wields a potent and innovative toolkit
that is as disruptive as it is efficient.

3.4. The integrated exploration approach enables to:

o substantially increase chance of success,

o reduce cost of exploration by acquiring less seismic than normally and higher chances of no dry
holes,
o identify areas within the exploration acreage where the detailed seismic or drilling /trenching
should be planned,
o estimate resources and their values to make decision whether to proceed with the acreage or
relinquish etc.,
o prioritize leads by their COS, estimated resources, economics etc., at the very beginning of the
field life,
o outline realistic exploration program

3.5. how can you use this tool?

3.5.1 Greenfields

I. Screening of large areas for delimitate areas of interest (where a seismic could be useful), for
decrease the cost of a systematic seismic over 100 % of the new field when if only 15% are really
With probability to discover a reservoir

II. Screening of the blocs included in an auction or license cycle for determine
• if some of the blocs have interest
• if the cost of exploration by traditional seismic is acceptable

3.5.2. brownfields

I. in case of merging or acquisition of another block or a complete E%P, this the sole way to
determine the real potential

II. Re explore the mature fields is of a high interest because without to start a green project with a lot
of time, a lot a paperwork, a lot of human energy and a lot of money you increase your production.
In this case its only a modification of the network of production.

3.6 Oil and gas reserve certifications

3.6.1. Authority or government

The only possibility for a government to control its oil and gas operators is to carry out its own certification
of its reserves by experts approved by the Commission of the Security Exchange (SEC) of the NYSE.

3.6.2 Reserves Certifications for an E&P

A reserves certification is an official document—signed and stamped by a third-party, licensed petroleum
engineer or geologist—that discloses petroleum reserves, estimated future production profiles and cash
flows.

A consultant estimates petroleum reserves through a reserve’s evaluation process. Clients present
independent reserves certifications to E&P companies, management, governments, including regulatory
authorities, as well as to banks, law firms, courts, trustees, accountants and arbiters.

• Uses for Independent Reserves Certifications

• Periodic regulatory filings, initial public offerings
• Submissions to government, ministerial agencies and national oil companies
• Declarations of commerciality
• Loan covenants, borrowing-base determinations and redeterminations
• Potential financial transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures and mergers
• Restructuring, bankruptcies, liquidations
• Estate and tax planning
• Legal filings, affidavits/exhibits, expert witness testimony
• Redeterminations and unitizations
• Give a better vision of the company to the shareholders
• Support the quote at the stock exchange for increase the value of the E&P
• The idea of a restudying of the reserves in a brown field with RSS-NMR can be the solution for
finance the physical refurbish of the same brownfield presenting a complete study to the
certifications company
