Overview:
This lesson will teach students about several of the rules regarding
exponents. It focuses on the seven (7) exponent rules. This lesson will tackle some
of the basics regarding the rules of exponents.
Time Allotment:
1 hour (class periods)
Subject Matter:
Seven (7) Exponents Rules
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to;
Understand the Seven Exponent Rules
Develop laws of exponents
Define negative exponents
Learn something of the Basics of the Rules of Exponents
Materials/ Resources:
Scientific / Normal calculator
Learning Procedure:
A. Preliminary
- Greetings
- Prayer
- Checking attendance
B. Discusses
- Seven (7) Exponents Rules
Assume that a and b are non zero real numbers, and m and n
are any integers
1. Zero property of Exponent
b0 =1
example:
50 =1
2. Negative Property of Exponents
b-n = 1 or 1 = bn
bn b-n
example:
2-4 = 1 or 1
24 x-7
=1 =x7
16
3. Product Property of Exponent
example:
X7 = X7-4
X4
= 3
X
example:
(x5)3 = b5.3
= 15
b
example:
(23 x7y6)2 =23.2 x7.2y6.2
=26 x14y12
=64 x14y12
m
a = am
b bm
example:
3x4 = 33 x 12
Y6 y18
= 27 x 12
Y 18
C. Activities
Instruction : Answer the following questions. Identify whether it is zero,
negative, product, quotient, power of a power, power of a product, or power of a
quotient property of exponent.
1. ________= 60 =1
2. ________= (x3) (x2)= (x3+2)
3. ________= (x7)2 = x7.2
=x14
4. ________= x4 = x4-3
X3
= x4
5. _________= 3-3 = 1 1
33 or x-3
=1
=
27 x3
D. Assignments:
Give one example each of the Seven (7) Rules of Exponents
