INDUCTOR AND INDUCTANCE PHOTO

Worksheet
1. Inductance is defined as what?

Explain your answer

Inductance is the tendency of an electrical conductor to oppose a change

in the electric current flowing through it. An electronic component designed to
add inductance to a circuit is called an inductor. It typically consists of a coil or
helix of wire. The SI unit of inductance is Henry (H).

2. State the relationship between the inductance value of a coil and the amount of emf it
produces.

Explain your answer

If we will based on the formula, which is VL = L (di/dt), the value of inductance of

a coil is directly proportional to the amount of emf it produces. The greater the value of
the inductance, the greater value of the amount of emf it produces given that the rate of
change of current given time is constant.

3. What effect (increase or decrease) would the following changes have on the
inductance of a coil?
a. Increase in the number of turns of wire.
b. Removal of its iron core.
c. Spacing the turns of wire farther apart.

Explain your answer

A. If we based on the formula L = N/I, the number of turns is directly

proportional to inductance of a coil so if we increase the number of turns
in wire, the inductance of the coil also increases.
B. In the formula of mutual inductance, the relative permeability of the core is
directly proportional to the inductance of the coil. So by removing its iron
core, its relative permeability decreases so the inductance of a coil also
decreases.
C. By spacing the turns of wire farther apart, it also decreases the number of
turns it can do on its iron core, so it will decreases the inductance of a coil.

4. For a coil that has an inductance of 5H and a DC resistance of 10 Ω:

a. Calculate the RL time constant.
b. When the DC voltage is applied to this coil, approximately how long will it take
for the current to reach its maximum value?

Data Formula Solutions Answer

A
T = 0.5seconds

B
Five-time
constants

5. Two coils have mutual inductance of M= 3.25×10−4 H. The current I_1 in the first coil
increases at a uniform rate of 860 A/s. What is the magnitude of the induced emf in the
second coil? Suppose that the current described is in the second coil rather than the first.
What is the magnitude of the induced emf in the first coil?

Data Formula Solutions Answer

VL = 280mV

6. At the instant when the current in an inductor is increasing at a rate of 6.45×10−2 A/s,
the magnitude of the self-induced emf is 1.65×10−2 V. What is the inductance of the
inductor If the inductor is a solenoid with 405 turns, what is the average magnetic flux
through each turn when the current is 0.725 A?

Data Formula Solutions Answer

L = 256Mh

 = 0.458mWb

7. A solenoid coil with 26 turns of wire is wound tightly around another coil with 330 turns.
The inner solenoid is 23.0 cm long and has a diameter of 2.30 cm. At a certain time, the
current in the inner solenoid is 0.130 A and is increasing at a rate of 1700 A/s. (a) For this
time, calculate the average magnetic flux through each turn of the inner solenoid (b) For
this time, calculate the mutual inductance of the two solenoids; For this time, calculate
the emf induced in the outer solenoid by the changing current in the inner solenoid.

Data Formula Solutions Answer

= 9.74x10-8WB

M= 19.5µH

VL= -33.1mV
