PACING
Laboratory Exercise no. 1

A. INTRODUCTION

The accurate determination of the distance between two points on any

surface is one of the basic operations of plane surveying but it is difficult if
measuring instrument is not available thereby giving inaccurate dimensions.
This exercise Pacing, will determine the pace factor of an individual. Steps of
every person can be utilized in measuring distance if tape measure is not
available.

Pacing consists of counting the number of steps or paces in a required

distance. A pace is define as the length of step in walking. It may be measured
from heel to heel or toe to toe. In surveying, pacing means moving with
horizontal steps and if the steps are counted, distances can be determined if the
length of a step is known.

Engaging Activities

B. PROCEDURE:

1. Locate an even land.

2. Measure a 100 m distance and mark it at point A form the beginning up to
point
B. (100 m mark).
3. Make 10 trials on a 100 m distance using your own steps employing a heel
to
heel or toe to toe on point A going to point B marker.
4. Record the number of steps
5. Compute your individual pace factor using the formula;

Average no. of steps = total steps/10

PF = distance/average no. of steps = 100/ ave. steps= answer should

be in meter.
Example: PF= 100/135.8 = 0.73 m
Distance = Pace factor x average no. of steps
Distance = 0.73 x 136 = 99.27 m

% error = (100 – computed distance) x 100 = 0.27%

MEASUREMENT OF AN AREA BY PACING

LABORATORY EXERCISE NO.2

A. INTRODUCTION
The method of pacing is not so accurate to measure a distance or an area. But
each measurement done by pacing is nearly similar to the original distance. So in this exercise
try to measure an area of buildings inside the LSPU Siniloan campus using a pacing method.

A. OBJECTIVES
1. To measure an area of different LSPU buildings by pacing
2. To determine the differences between the measurement by pacing to the
original measurement.

B. MATERIALS
Tape measure, range pole, Chaining pins

C. PROCEDURE:
1. Go to LSPU gymnasium, engineering building, student center building and academic
building and mark the edge of the length and width of each building
2. Make 5 trials in this exercise.
3. Compute the length, width and the total area.

PF = distance/average no. of steps

Distance = Pace factor x average no. of steps

% error = (100 – computed distance) x 100

Area = length x width
