WARNINGS FOR THE USER

STANDARDS FOR THE CORRECT USE OF THE EQUIPMENT

- Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight
- Protect from rain (except for special IP versions)
- Do not wash with water jets (except for special IP versions)
- Do not immerse in water
- Do not pour liquids
- Do not use solvents for cleaning
- Do not install in environments with risk of explosion (except for special Atex versions)

STANDARDS FOR THE CORRECT INSTALLATION OF THE EQUIPMENT

The terminals indicated on the wiring diagram of the instrument to be connected to earth
must have the same potential as the weighed structure (same chamber or ground network). If
you are not sure whether this requirement is met, connect the instrument terminals
(including the SUPPLY terminal) and the weighed structure with a ground wire.
The cell cable must be inserted into the cabinet individually and must not pass through ducts with
other cables; as a rule, connect it directly to the terminal board of the instrument without interrupting
it with support terminal boards.
Use "RC" filters on the coils of the contactors and solenoid valves controlled by the instruments.
Avoid installing the instrument in a panel containing inverters; if unavoidable, equip the inverters with
appropriate filters and interpose separation plates.
The electrical protections for the instruments (fuses, door lock switch, etc.) are the responsibility of
the panel installer.
In the event of condensation inside the equipment, it is advisable to keep it powered at all times.

MAXIMUM CABLE LENGTHS

- RS485: 1000 m with AWG24 type cables, twisted and shielded
- RS232: 15 m for baud-rate up to 19200
- Analogue under current: up to 500 m with 0.5 mm2 cable
- Analogue under voltage: up to 300 m with 0.5 mm2 cable

STANDARDS FOR THE CORRECT INSTALLATION OF LOAD CELLS

ASSEMBLY OF LOAD CELLS: The bearing surfaces of the load cells must be coplanar and
sufficiently rigid; suitable mounting accessories must be used to compensate for the non-parallelism
of the bearing surfaces.

CELL CABLE PROTECTION: Use watertight conduits and fittings to protect the cell cables.

MECHANICAL CONNECTIONS (pipes, etc.): In the presence of pipes, use flexible hoses and
elastic or free inlet joints with rubber protection; in the case of rigid pipes, place the pipe support or
anchor bracket as far as possible from the weighed structure (at least 40 times the diameter of the
pipe).

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 5 of 47

PARALLEL CONNECTION OF SEVERAL CELLS: Use a watertight junction box with terminal
board to connect several cells in parallel, if necessary. The cell connection extension cables must be
shielded, inserted individually in the duct or pipe and laid as far away as possible from the power
cables (in the case of 4-conductor cable, use a minimum cross section of 1 mm2).

WELDING: It is not recommended to carry out welds with load cells already installed; if unavoidable,
place the ground clamp of the welding machine near the point where you want to weld, so as to
prevent current from passing through the body of the load cell.

PRESENCE OF WIND - SHOCKS - VIBRATIONS: Suitable mounting accessories are available for
all load cells to compensate for the non-planarity of the bearing surfaces. It will be the task of the
plant designer to provide further measures against lateral movements and tipping over depending
on: shocks and vibrations, wind thrust, seismic classification of the installation area, consistency of
the supporting base.

GROUNDING OF THE WEIGHED STRUCTURE: Connect the upper support plate of each cell to its
lower plate using a copper conductor of suitable cross section, then connect all the lower plates to
the same ground network. Electrostatic charges accumulated by product rubbing against the pipes
and walls of the weighed container are discharged to the ground without passing through and
damaging the load cells. Failure to carry out a correct grounding system may not affect the operation
of the weighing system, but does not exclude the possibility of future damage to the cells and the
instrument connected to them. Continuity of the grounding system through metal parts of the
weighed structure is not permitted.

NON-OBSERVANCE OF THE INSTALLATION REGULATIONS IS TO BE CONSIDERED AS

IMPROPER USE OF THE EQUIPMENT

LOAD CELL INPUT TEST (FAST ACCESS)
3s
 
From the weight display, press ▲ for 3 seconds; the response signal of the load cells is displayed in
mV with four decimal places.

LOAD CELL VERIFICATION

Resistance measurement of load cells with digital multimeter:

- Disconnect the cells from the instrument and check that there is no moisture in the cell junction
box due to condensation or water penetration. In this case, clean up the system and replace it if
necessary.
- Check that there is a value between the positive and negative signal wires similar to that
indicated on the load cell data sheet (output resistance).
- Check that there is a value between the positive and negative power supply wires similar to the
one indicated on the cell data sheet (input resistance).
- Check that there is an insulation value of more than 20 Mohm between the screen and any of the
other cell wires, and between any of the other cell wires and the cell body.

Load cell voltage measurement with digital multimeter:

- Remove the cell you want to check from under the container, or raise the support of the
container.
- Check that the power supply wires of the cell connected to the instrument (or amplifier) have a
voltage of 5 VDC ±3%.
- Measure the cell response signal between the positive and negative signal wires by connecting
them directly to the tester, and verify that this is between 0 and 0.5 mV.
- Exercise a force on the cell and check for an increase in signal.

IF ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS HAVE NOT BEEN MET, PLEASE CONTACT THE TECHNICAL
SUPPORT SERVICE.

COMMISSIONING OF THE INSTRUMENT

The following appears in sequence when the unit is switched on:

-  →  (ONLY in the case of an approved programme);
- the instrument model (e.g. );
-  followed by the code of the software (e.g. );
- the type of program:  (basic);
-  followed by the software revision (e.g.  );
-  followed by the code of the hardware (e.g.  );
- the serial number (e.g. );

Check that the display shows the weight and that the weight increases when the load cells are
loaded; otherwise check the connections and the correct positioning of the load cells.

- If the instrument is already theoretically CALIBRATED (there is the plant identification label
on the instrument and on the cover: the load cell plate values are already inserted):
▫ Reset the weight (see section TARE ZEROING)
▫ Check the calibration with sample weights and, if necessary, proceed to the correction of the
indicated weight (see paragraph REAL CALIBRATION (WITH SAMPLE WEIGHTS)).

- If the instrument is NOT CALIBRATED (plant identification label not present), proceed to
calibration:
▫ If the data of the load cells are unknown, follow the procedure in the paragraph REAL
CALIBRATION (WITH SAMPLE WEIGHTS)
▫ If the load cell plate data are unknown, enter it following the procedure in the paragraph
THEORETICAL CALIBRATION.
▫ Reset the weight (see section TARE ZEROING)
▫ Check the calibration with sample weights and, if necessary, proceed to the correction of the
indicated weight (see paragraph REAL CALIBRATION (WITH SAMPLE WEIGHTS)).

- If the analogue output is used, set the desired analogue output type and the full scale value (see
paragraph ANALOGUE OUTPUT).
- If serial communication is used, set the relative parameters (see paragraph SERIAL
COMMUNICATION SETTING).
- If you use the setpoints, set the desired weight values and the relative parameters (see
paragraphs SETPOINT PROGRAMMING and OUTPUT AND INPUT CONFIGURATION).

SETTING).

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 14 of 47

PROGRAMMING OF SYSTEM PARAMETERS

From the weight display, simultaneously press the keys MENU and ESC to access the parameter
setting.

MENU/ENTER: enter the menu or confirm the programmed data.

▲: change the digit or the displayed menu item.
◄: select a new digit or change the displayed menu item.
ESC: cancel or return to previous menu.

THEORETICAL CALIBRATION

 +    

This function allows the plate values of the load cells to be entered in the instrument.

To perform the theoretical calibration, set the following parameters in sequence:

-  (default: ): The full scale of the system is given by the capacity of a cell
multiplied by the number of the used cells. Example: 4 cells of 1000 kg  F.SCALE = 1000 x 4
= 4000.
The instrument is supplied with a theoretical full scale  corresponding to 10000. Set the full
scale to 0 to restore the factory settings.
-  (default: 2.00000 mV/V): Sensitivity is a load cell plate parameter expressed in mV/V.
Set the average value of sensitivity indicated on the load cells. A value between 0.50000 and
7.00000 mV/V can be set. Example of a system with 4 cells with sensitivity: 2.00100, 2.00150,
2.00200, 2.00250; the value to be set is 2.00175 and is the result of the following calculation
(2.00100 + 2.00150 + 2.00200 + 2.00250) / 4.
- : Division (resolution) is the minimum value of weight gain that can be displayed. It is
automatically calculated by the system based on the performed calibration, so as to correspond
to 1/10000 of the full scale. It can be changed and it can vary from 0.0001 to 100 with x1 x2 x5
x10 increments.

- If full scale, sensitivity or division are changed, the real calibration is cancelled and the
theoretical calibration is considered valid.
- If the theoretical full scale and the full scale recalculated in the real calibration (see
paragraph REAL CALIBRATION (WITH SAMPLE WEIGHT)) are the same, it means
that the calibration currently in use is the theoretical one; if they are different, the
calibration in use is the real one with sample weight.
- If theoretical full scale, sensitivity or divisions are changed, the system parameters
containing a weight value will be set to the default values (setpoint, hysteresis, etc...).

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 15 of 47

MAXIMUM CAPACITY

 +   

: Maximum weight that can be displayed (from 0 to max. full scale; default: 0). When the
weight exceeds this value of 9 divisions  is displayed. To disable this function, set to 0.

TARE ZEROING

 +   

You can also access this menu directly from the weight display by holding the 0
button pressed for three seconds.

Carry out this procedure after setting the THEORETICAL CALIBRATION data.

Use this function to reset the weight of the empty system after the first installation and then to
compensate for zero variations due to the presence of product residues.
Procedure:
- Confirm with ENTER the  message.
- The weight value to be reset appears; at this stage all the LEDs are flashing.
- Confirming again resets the weight (the value is stored in the permanent memory).
- Press ▲ to display the total weight value zeroed by the instrument; this is determined by the
sum of all previous zeroings.

MANUAL ENTRY OF THE ZERO VALUE

 +    

CAUTION: Perform this procedure only if the tare of the weighed structure cannot be reset, for
example because it contains product that cannot be unloaded.
In this parameter, set the assumed value of zero (from 0 to max 999999; default: 0).

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 16 of 47

REAL CALIBRATION (WITH SAMPLE WEIGHTS)

 +   

After performing the THEORETICAL CALIBRATION and the TARE ZEROING, this function
allows you to carry out the calibration using sample weights of known value and, if
necessary, to correct deviations of the indicated value from the correct one.

Load on the weighing system a weight considered to be a sample, equal to at least 50% of the
maximum quantity to be weighed.

Confirm the  message to display the (flashing) weight value loaded on the system. All LEDs
are off at this stage. If necessary, correct the displayed value using the arrow keys. When the new
value is confirmed, all LEDs will flash. After further confirmation, you go back to the 
message and press ESC several times to go back to the weight display.

Example: for a system with a maximum capacity of 1000 kg and division of 1 kg, two sample
weights of 500 and 300 kg are available. Load both weights on the system and correct the indicated
weight to 800. Remove the 300 kg weight; the system should now indicate 500. Remove also the
500 kg weight; the system should return to zero. If this doesn’t happen there is a mechanical
problem on the system that alters the linearity.

CAUTION: Identify and remove mechanical problems before repeating the procedure.

- If the theoretical full scale and the full scale recalculated in the real calibration are the
same, it means that the calibration currently in use is the theoretical one; if they are
different, the calibration in use is the real one with sample weight.
- If the correction made changes the previous full scale by more than 20%, all the
parameters with adjustable weight values are reset to the default values.

POSSIBILITY OF LINEARIZATION AT A MAXIMUM OF 5 POINTS:

Weight can be linearized repeating the above procedure up to a maximum of five points, with
five different sample weights. The procedure is terminated by pressing ESC or after entering
the fifth value; at this stage the current calibration can no longer be modified, but only a new real
calibration can be performed. In order to perform a new calibration, you must return to the weight
display and then return to the calibration menu.
After confirming the set sample weight, press ▲ to display the full scale recalculated on the
maximum entered sample weight value, taking as reference the cell sensitivity set in the theoretical
calibration ().

WEIGHT FILTER

 +  

Setting this parameter provides a stable weight display.

To improve the effect (more stable weight) increase the value (from 0 to 9; default: 4).
Follow the procedure below:
- Confirm the  message to display the currently set filter value.
- Change the value and confirm the weight to display the latter and experimentally check its
stability.
- If stability is not satisfactory, confirm and return to  message; you can change the filter
again until you get an optimal result.

The filter makes it possible to stabilize a weight whose variations are lower than its “response time”.
This filter must be set according to the type of use and in relation to the set full scale value.

FILTER VALUE Response times Display and serial port refresh

[ms] frequency
[Hz]
0 12 300
1 150 100

RESETTABLE WEIGHT SETTING FOR SMALL WEIGHT VARIATIONS

  (from 0 to max. full scale; default: 300; the decimal places are taken into account: 300 – 30.0
– 3.00 – 0.300): This parameter indicates the maximum weight value that can be reset by external
contact, by keyboard or by serial protocol.

AUTO-ZERO AT SWITCH-ON

  (from 0 to max 20% of full scale; default: 0): If, when the instrument is switched on, the
read weight value is lower than the value of this parameter and does not exceed the value of
 , the read weight is reset. To disable this function, set to 0.

ZERO TRACKING

  (1 to 5, default: ). When the weight is stable, if after one second it deviates from zero
by a number of divisions lower than or equal to the divisions set in this parameter, the weight is
reset. To disable this function set .
Example: if the parameter  is set to 5 and   is set to 2, the weight will be
automatically reset for variations lower than or equal to 10 ( x  ).

UNIT OF MEASUREMENT SETTING

 +   

The available units of measurement are:

: kilograms
: grams
: tons
: pounds*
: Newton*
: litres*
: bars*
: atmospheres*
: pieces*
: Newton metres*
: kilogram-metres*
: generic unit of measurement not included in the list*

If printing is enabled, the symbol for the selected unit is printed after the measured value.

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 19 of 47

For the units of measurement marked with * it is also possible to set the display
coefficient (parameter , see the dedicated paragraph). If you want to use ,
it is necessary to enable it by closing the input  (see paragraph OUTPUT AND
INPUT CONFIGURATION).

DISPLAY COEFFICIENT

 +   

By setting the coefficient , the display changes according to this value.

If one of the inputs is set in the  mode (see paragraph OUTPUT AND INPUT
CONFIGURATION), when the input is closed, the value modified according to the coefficient 
is displayed; when the input is open, you go back to normal weight display.

: (max. value that can be set: 99.9999; default: 1.0000) has a different meaning depending
on the value set in , namely on the unit of measurement chosen (see paragraph UNIT OF
MEASUREMENT SETTING).

If the unit of measurement chosen is:

: pounds, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently displayed;
: Newton, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently displayed;
: litres, in  set the specific weight in kg/l; it is assumed that the system is calibrated in
kg;
: bars, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently displayed;
: atmosphere, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently displayed;
: pieces, in  set the weight of a piece;
: Newton metres, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently
displayed;
: kilogram-metre, the value set in  will be multiplied by the weight value currently
displayed;
: generic unit of measurement not included in the list, the value set in  will be
multiplied by the weight value currently displayed;

WARNING: all other settings (setpoint, hysteresis, calibration...) remain expressed in

weight value. If you want to convert them to the new unit of measurement, perform one of
the following procedures to change the system calibration.
The parameter  must remain set to 1.0000.

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 20 of 47

CHANGING THE THEORETICAL CALIBRATION FOR OTHER UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
In the parameter  set the F.SCALE value divided by the coefficient of transformation from
kg to the new unit of measurement.
Example: 4 load cells of 1000 kg are placed under a scale for olive oil, which has a specific weight of
0.916 kg/l. By setting the F.SCALE = (4 x 1000) / 0.916 = 4367 the system works in litres of olive oil.
In addition, if you set the parameter  =  (see paragraph UNIT OF MEASUREMENT
SETTING), the system will display and print the symbol “l” instead of the symbol “kg”.

CHANGING THE REAL CALIBRATION FOR OTHER UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

Load a known quantity of litres of product on the scale (equal to at least 50% of the maximum
quantity to be weighed) and in the parameter  enter the value in litres of the loaded product.
In addition, if you set the parameter  =  (see paragraph UNIT OF MEASUREMENT
SETTING), the system will display and print the symbol “l” instead of the symbol “kg”.

CONFIGURATION OF OUTPUTS AND INPUTS

 +      

… …

   
OUTPUTS
By default, the outputs are set as follows:  /  /  /  / .

Possible operating modes:

-  (normally open): the relay is de-energized and the contact is open when the weight is
lower than the setpoint set; it closes when the weight is higher than or equal to the setpoint set.
-  (normally closed): the relay is energized and the contact is closed when the weight is
lower than the setpoint set; it opens when the weight is higher than or equal to the setpoint set.

- : the contact changes state according to the weight value specified in the setpoints (see
paragraph PROGRAMMING OF SETPOINTS).
- : the contact does not switch according to weight but is remotely managed by protocol
commands.
- : the relay switches when the weight is stable.

If you select the operating mode , the following options are also active:
- : the contact changes state according to the gross weight value.
- : the contact changes state according to the net weight value (if the net function is not active,
the contact changes state according to the gross weight).

- : the relay switches between positive and negative weight values.
- : the relay switches only according to positive weight value.
- : the relay switches only according to negative weight value.
Confirm with ENTER to select the operation of the setpoints on the value 0:
Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 21 of 47
- : the relay does not switch if the setpoint value is 0.
- :
- setpoint = 0 and switching = : the relay switches when the weight is 0, the relay
switches again when the weight is not zero taking into account the hysteresis (both for
positive and for negative weight).
- setpoint = 0 and switching = : the relay switches for weight higher than or equal to 0,
the relay switches again for values lower than 0 and taking into account the hysteresis.
- setpoint = 0 and switching = : the relay switches for weight lower than or equal to 0,
the relay switches again for values higher than 0 and taking into account the hysteresis.

INPUTS
Default: input 1 =  input 2 =  input 3 = 

Possible operating modes:

-  (NET/GROSS): If the input is closed for a maximum of one second, a SEMI-
AUTOMATIC TARE operation is performed and the display will show the net weight. To display
the gross weight again, keep the input closed for 3 seconds.
- : If the input is closed for a maximum of one second, the zero operation is performed (see
paragraph SEMI-AUTOMATIC ZERO (RESET FOR SMALL WEIGHT VARIATIONS)).
- : if the input is kept closed, the maximum value of the weight reached is displayed. Open
the input to display the current weight.
- : if the input is closed, no operation is performed, but the status of the input can be read
remotely by means of a communication protocol.
- : if the input is closed for a maximum of one second, the weight is transmitted on the
serial port with continuous fast transmission protocol only once (only if  is set in the
item ).
- : when the input is closed, the weight is displayed according to the set coefficient (see
unit of measurement setting and coefficient), otherwise the weight is displayed.
- : when the input is closed, the data to be printed is sent if the parameter  is set
in the communication protocol of one of the two serial ports.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC TARE (NET/GROSS)

THE SEMI-AUTOMATIC TARE OPERATION IS LOST WHEN THE INSTRUMENT IS

SWITCHED OFF.

To perform a net operation (SEMI-AUTOMATIC TARE) close the NET/GROSS input or press the
button TARE for less than three seconds. The instrument displays the net weight (just zeroed) and
the NET LED lights up. To display the gross weight again, keep the NET/GROSS input closed or
press TARE for 3 seconds.
This operation can be repeated by the operator several times to load more products.

Example:
Place the container on the scale. The display shows the weight of the container; press TARE. The
display shows the net weight at zero; insert the product into the container. The display shows the
weight of the product. This operation can be repeated several times.

While viewing the net weight, press and hold the ▲ button to temporarily display
the gross weight. When the button is released, the net weight is displayed again.
Semi-automatic tare operation is not allowed if the gross weight is at zero.

PREDETERMINED TARE (SUBTRACTIVE TARE DEVICE)

 + 
It is possible to manually enter a predetermined tare value to be subtracted from
the display indication provided that the condition  ≤ maximum capacity is
met.

By default the instrument displays the last predetermined set tare value: to apply it press ▲ and
then ENTER.
After setting the tare value, when you go back to the weight display, the screen shows the net
weight (subtracting the set tare value) and the NET LED is lit to indicate the presence of an entered
tare.
To cancel the predetermined tare and return to the gross weight display, press and hold TARE for
about 3 seconds or keep the NET/GROSS input closed for 3 seconds. The predetermined tare value
is reset to zero. The NET LED goes off when the gross weight is displayed again.

While viewing the net weight, press and hold the ▲ button to temporarily display
the gross weight. When the button is released, the net weight is displayed again.

- IF A SEMI-AUTOMATIC (NET) TARE IS ENTERED, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO

ACCESS THE PREDETERMINED TARE ENTERING FUNCTION.

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 23 of 47

- IF A PREDETERMINED TARE HAS BEEN ENTERED, IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO
ACCESS THE SEMI-AUTOMATIC (NET) TARE FUNCTION, THE TWO DIFFERENT
TYPES OF TARES ARE ADDED TOGETHER.

ALL THE FUNCTIONS OF SEMI-AUTOMATIC TARE (NET) AND PREDETERMINED

TARE ARE LOST WHEN THE INSTRUMENT IS SWITCHED OFF.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC ZERO (RESET FOR SMALL WEIGHT VARIATIONS)

Close the SEMI-AUTOMATIC ZERO input, the weight will be reset; or press the 0 button for
less than 3 seconds,  appears for 3 seconds, press ENTER to reset the weight.
The function is only permitted if the weight is lower than the quantity set in the   item (see
paragraph RESETTABLE WEIGHT SETTING FOR SMALL WEIGHT VARIATIONS), otherwise
(higher weight)  appears and the weight is not reset.

PEAK

If the PEAK input is kept closed, the maximum value of the weight reached remains displayed. Open
the input to display the current weight.

If you want to use this input to display a peak of sudden changes, set the WEIGHT
FILTER to 0.

ANALOGUE OUTPUT (ONLY FOR INSTRUMENTS EQUIPPED WITH THIS OPTION)

 +  

- : select the analogue output type (4÷20 mA, 0÷20 mA, 0÷10 V, 0÷5 V), ±10 V, ±5 V;
default: 4÷20 mA).

- : selection of weight followed by analogue output: gross () or net (). If the net
function is not active, the analogue output varies with the gross weight.
-  : set the weight value for which you want to have the minimum value of the analogue
output.

Set a value other than zero only if you want to limit the range of the analogue output.
Example: if you want the 4 mA signal at 5000 kg and 20 mA signal at 10000 kg for a full
scale of 10000 kg, in this case set 5000 kg instead of zero.

-  : set the weight value for which you want to have the maximum value of the analogue
output; it must correspond to that set in the PLC program (default: full scale calibration).
Example: if you use a 4÷20 mA output and in the PLC program you want 20 mA = 8000 kg, set
the parameter to 8000.

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 24 of 47

-  : correction of the analogue output to zero: if necessary, it allows the analogue output to
be modified and the PLC to indicate 0. On the last digit on the left you can set the sign “-”.
Example: if you use a 4÷20 mA output and with the analogue output at the minimum the PLC or
tester reads 4.1 mA, set the parameter to 3.9 to have 4.0 on the PLC or tester.
-  : correction of the analogue output to full scale: if necessary, it allows the analogue
output to be modified and the PLC to indicate the value set in the parameter  . Example:
if you use a 4÷20 mA output and with the analogue output at full scale the PLC or tester reads
19.9 mA, set the parameter to 20.1 to have 20.0 on the PLC or tester.

Minimum and maximum values that can be set for zero and full scale corrections:
TYPE OF ANALOGUE Minimum Maximum
OUTPUT
0÷10 V -0,150 10,200
0÷5 V -0,150 5,500
±10 V -10,300 10,200
±5 V -5,500 5,500
0÷20 mA -0,200 22,000
4÷20 mA -0,200 22,000

NOTE: the analogue output can also be used in reverse mode, i.e. the set weight that corresponds
to the analogue zero ( ) can be higher than the weight set for the analogue full scale
( ). The analogue output will increase towards full scale while the weight decreases, the
analogue output will decrease while the weight increases.

Example:
  = 10000   = 0 analogue output 0÷10 V

Weight = 0 kg analogue output = 10 V

Weight = 5000 kg analogue output = 5 V
Weight =10000 kg analogue output = 0 V

All the analogue outputs of the instrument are ACTIVE and SINGLE ENDED, therefore
only PASSIVE receivers can be connected to them. The minimum load allowed for
voltage outputs is 10 kohm, the maximum load allowed for powered outputs is 300 Ohm.

DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN RS485 AND RS232 WITHOUT CONVERTER

As a two-wire RS485 output can be used directly on an RS232 input of a PC or repeater, it is
possible to connect the instrument to an RS232 port in the following way:

WEIGHT READING THROUGH SERIAL PORT

Preliminary remarks:
The transmitting instrument is the instrument connected to the load cell.
The receiving instrument is the instrument that receives the weight via serial port.

This function allows the instrument to read the weight from another instrument (transmitting
instrument) rather than from a load cell, via the RS485 or RS232 serial port. The outputs, the serial
ports and the analogue output (if present) continue to operate as described in the manual of the
receivinginstrument, using the value received via serial port as the weight value.
The instrument supports two different ways of reading the weight from the serial port:
-  (see paragraph WEIMOD MODE)
-  (see paragraph WEIRIP MODE)

WARNING: before you can use the weight reading from the serial port, you must
configure the weight reading mode as  (see paragraph DATA DELETION AND
PROGRAM SELECTION).

COMMUNICATION CONFIGURATION

Within the paragraph SERIAL COMMUNICATION SETTING (see receiving instrument manual)
select the serial port and the desired operating mode WEIRIP () or WEIMOD ().

It is not possible to activate this function on both serial ports; in case of conflict, the serial
port that was last set remains active.

Configurable parameters:
- : transmission speed (2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 115200; default: 9600).
- : address of the transmitting instrument (only for , from 1 to 99; default: 1).
- : value of delay in milliseconds that the instrument allows to pass before sending the
response (from 0 to 200 ms; default: 0).
- :
- : no parity (default).
- : even parity.
- : odd parity.
- : stop bits (1 – 2; default: 1).

The same values as the parameters of the transmitting instrument must be set in the
receiving instrument.

Weight Viewer ED840 Manual Page 30 of 47

WEIMOD MODE

The receiving instrument operates as if the load cell is directly connected to the instrument. It is
therefore possible to carry out calibrations and zeroings on the receiving instrument. The protocol
used is Modbus (the transmitting instrument operates as a “slave” and the receiving instrument as a
“master”).

Before selecting the  mode on the receiving instrument, you must set the filter
value you want to use on the transmitting instrument.

Set the protocol  on the transmitting instrument (see paragraph SERIAL
COMMUNICATION SETTING in the instrument manual); the instrument display is automatically
locked when the instrument is switched on and shows the instrument model. If it is necessary to
unlock it, interrupt the connection with the receiving instrument and follow the procedure in
paragraph DISPLAY OR KEYPAD LOCK (see the manual of the transmitting instrument).

WEIRIP MODE

The instrument receives the gross weight present on the scale from the serial port and operates as if
the load cell is directly connected to the instrument.
However, it is possible to carry out calibrations and zeroings on the receiving instrument. These
operations must be performed on the instrument connected to the load cell.

Set the protocol  on the transmitting instrument and the protocol  on the receiving
instrument (see paragraph SERIAL COMMUNICATION SETTING in the instrument manual).
On the receiving instrument it is possible to set the parameters  and ;

 : converter inside the faulty instrument, check the connections and, if necessary, contact
the assistance service.
: the weight exceeds the maximum capacity by 9 divisions.
 : the maximum value that can be displayed has been exceeded (value greater than
999999 or less than
-999999).
: the maximum value that can be displayed on the transmitting instrument has been
exceeded (value greater than 999999 or less than -999999).
: weight too high: zeroing is not possible.
: this message appears in the sample weight setting, in the real calibration, after the fifth
sample weight value has been entered.
: the value set for the parameter is outside the permitted values; press ESC to exit the
setting and keep the old stored value in memory.
Examples: selection of a number of decimals that, referred to the full scale, exceeds the
displaying possibility of the instrument; value higher than the settable maximum; weight
value set in the verification of the sample weight that is not consistent with the detected
mV increase; correction of the analogue output outside the maximum permitted values.
: block is active on the menu item, the keyboard or the display.
: The number higher than 999999 or lower than -999999 cannot be displayed correctly.
: low backup battery, lost date and time of the internal clock (Real-Time Clock). Confirm
with ENTER to continue and leave the instrument on for at least 12 hours to recharge the
battery; if the alarm persists, contact the assistance service.
: it is displayed if the instrument detects an incorrect date. Access the relevant menu to
check and correct it if necessary.
: gross weight equal to zero: the semi-automatic tare cannot be performed.

In the event of an alarm, the relays open and the analogue outputs are set to the lowest
possible value according to the following table:
RANGE 0÷20 mA 4÷20 mA 0÷5 V 0÷10 V ±10 V ±5 V
Output value -0.2 mA 3.5 mA -0.5 V -0.5 V 0V 0V

OPZWING010: ANALOGUE INPUT UNDER 0-10 V VOLTAGE

This option allows you to connect transducers with 0+10 V voltage analogue output to the
instrument.
The input impedance of the instrument is 15 KΩ
- In the theoretical calibration procedure (see paragraph THEORETICAL CALCULATION) the
sensitivity data of the load cells is not required () and the instrument interprets 0V at the
input as a weight value equal to 0, while the 10V correspond to a weight value equal to the full scale
of the system ().
- The input Volts are read (parameter U-CELL) instead of the input mVs read from the load cell or
transducer (see parameter  in the paragraph LOAD CELL INPUT TEST).
